Disney anyone?

Hello ladies,

I wanted to share an awesome web site/forum that has been created by the designers at Disney. It is: http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=7ca63c574e4d8f0a3dd054c1a9b5600b&f=105

Basically, the designers will take requests (for free) and make personalized items that you print on your own (like t-shirt transfers, gift tags, autograph books, maps, gift boxes and just about anything else you can imagine). There is about a 3-5 day turnaround for a request, but the designs are just amazing.

The only negative is that the search engine is horrible, so be prepared to go through the threads one by one. I have used this site for birthday parties and Christmas gifts, in addition to making personalized t-shirts when we went to DisneyWorld. The designers are so nice and friendly, I hope that you enjoy the site as much as I have.

Temple GNO- moved!!

Ok, so I was planning on doing a temple GNO tomorrow night, but I'm going to move it to next week, Tues. the 1st, because that is our Stake Relief Society temple day. We will meet at my house at 6:00, or just meet us there! I'm sorry this is really last minute you guys! I hope to see a lot of you there.

ASL Class

Alright! So it is official. I will be doing my ASL classes on Fridays from 11am-12pm at my house, starting next Friday, Sept 4. It is free and everyone is welcome, children included. Don't worry about a babysitter, there is plenty to do at our house. We are used to chaos here. I am thinking we can do 8 weeks. If you are interested and would like to come, email me and let me know, or just show up at my house. The address that is on the ward list is no longer our residence. We live in the Edwards house. If you don't know where that is you can either call me or email me... stef(dot)burns(at)gmail(dot)com. Also, tell anyone that you know would like to come. The more the merrier!!
Look forward to seeing you then.

Book Club news

We talked about doing two different books for October 15th's meeting. There is only 1 copy of The Ladies Auxiliary by Tova Mirvisat the ABQ library and no copies at RR.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrowsis really popular and will take awhile to get at the ABQ library (132 holds) but they do have it on CD as well as it on digital audio (I don't know what that waiting line is like.) However, Rio Rancho has 8 copies of the book and no hold line for it. It looks like the Guernsey is the winner. We will need a host home and a discussion leader for this book. Any volunteers?

Also, FYI, we're doing Guns, Germs, and Steel for September 17th. Chelsie Larson will lead the discussion and it'll still be outside at my house. November 19th's book is Margaret Mitchell's Gone With The Wind. We also need a discussion leader and a host home for this book.

Happy readings,
Melissa

Book Club Tomorrow

Don't forget that book club is tomorrow, August 20th at 7:30 pm. We'll be reading Catch Me If You Can by Frank Abagnale, Jr. Melissa S. will be hosting it in her backyard, which is so much fun. If you haven't been, you should, and then you'll be completely jealous of how amazing her yard is. Bring a treat if you'd like, but don't feel pressured. We certainly don't want people missing out because they don't feel like they have time to make cupcakes for everyone.

We'll also be having a follow-up to this book club on September 3rd, also at 7:30. We'll watch the movie at my house (yes, our couch FINALLY arrived!). We've got the Clear Play movie filters, so any sketchy parts will be edited out so everyone can have an enjoyable time. Of course you can come if you can't make it to book club (and vice versa).

We look forward to seeing you there!

Lizard Habitat

Yesterday I impulsively bought a lizard tank off of craigslist thinking I'd be a great mom and give Benjamin the lizard he's been asking for for his birthday. Since then I've been questioning the wisdom of it since we are moving in only 10 months. So is anyone else interested in buying a lizard habitat (tank, heating pad, log home, mineral powder, water bowl) for $25? If so, call or email me.

Old furniture?

I have a friend that is getting divorced and needs some furniture. She is willing to pay for good used furniture. She needs a children's bedroom set with a full size frame/ headboard. Also, a couch and table. Anyone who is looking to part with any of these items, please let me know. Thanks! Susan

Trampoline repairs?

Does anyone know where you can get trampolines repaired? You know where the springs hook into the trampoline? Well, we have had several of them break and there are quite a few that are not that far off. Does anyone in the ward know how to sew it up? I could pay you? Or do you know of a place that can sew them back on?? The hole on the side of the tramp is getting bigger and I don't think it would be good for poor Camden to fall down into the pit...not good. He is so small we may never get him out. Anyway, if you know of a place, or a person...let me know! stef(dot)burns(at)gmail(dot)com. Thanks!

Drop and Swap?

I'd like to organize another "drop and swap" or "cleaning swap" like the one we had a year ago last May. I was thinking that this would be a good time of year to do it since the kids are going back to school and some might like to supplement back-to-school wardrobes and others might like to get rid of last year's.

Here is the thing: In order to head it up, I have to do it on a day that my hubby has off so he can watch the kiddos. The problem is that he only gets a Saturday off every once in a blue moon. So I have a few questions. First, are people interested in doing this again? Second, if so, would you rather do it right away (I could do it Wed. the 19th or Tues. the 25th) or wait and do it on a Saturday (probably September, maybe October-- I don't have his schedule yet)? Lastly, is there anyone who would volunteer to help with the set-up and clean-up?

Michaels Back to school free event!

I take the girls to Michaels whenever they have a fun craft. They usually have one about once a month. This one happens to be free! It's Saturday. Hope to see you there!

10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
All Michaels stores.

It's cool to get creative and unique with your school supplies. Using stickers and paints, personalize a metal tin to store pencils and pens
in one handy place.

Ages 5–12 welcome.
While supplies last.

Give coupons a try!

If any of you want to take a little dip into the world of couponing, this is a good week to do so! Albertson's has some really great deals this week and there is no limit to how many items you can get! The deals I'm talking about are on the front flap of the ad, and almost all of them have coupons you can find online!! Go to Coupons.com to print 2 sets of the coupons that match with the items, then go to Pillsbury and register to print 2 more sets of coupons. Some of the really great deals are Betty Crocker fruit snacks for 39 cents/box, Hamburger helper for 54 cents/box, nut clusters for 49 cents/bag, go-gurt for $1.09 (remember these can be frozen), and cereal for $1.00/box! Go soon because they may run out with deals like this!!

Advice??

What is the cheapest way to do phone, internet, and satellite service? I just cannot believe our bill for these 3 things! There has got to be a better way! We really like satellite, but mostly so we can DVR shows and watch them when the kids are in bed, so there might be a different way to do that as well. Also, we have thought of just going to cell phones, but how many minutes would you need a month to cover all the calls? What do you guys do?

Anyone been to this park????

Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the new park that is on Eagle Ranch a little bit past Paseo. If you turn right onto Eagle Ranch from Paseo it will be on the right a little before Coors. I am just wondering if it is a neighborhood park or city park. Thanks!

FHE Idea

With school starting, and the influx of new environments, I wanted to share a FHE we did about germs.

We talked about how our bodies are temples, and we need to keep them clean. We talked about how when we are clean, we are healthy. Then I had each child sit at the table. I poured a little bit of vegetable oil on their hands, and added a sprinkle of cinnamon, and had them rub their hands together. I then told them the cinnamon was like germs. I had each child set their hand on white paper, and showed them how the germs would transfer.

Then we tried washing our hands with just water. There was still cinnamon on their hands, so that meant that there was still germs. Then we washed with soap and water and sang "Twinkle Twinkle" while we were scrubbing. No more cinnamon-no more germs. Then we talked about the different times we need to wash our hands. The children were really excited, and now they understand (a little bit better) why I want them to wash their hands. Just thought I would pass it on.

Anyone thinking about life insurance?

My husband and I found a life insurance policy that we liked and I thought I’d tell you guys about it in case anyone is in the market. It’s called a “return of premium” policy. It’s a term life insurance policy of 15 (or more) years and at the end of your term, if you haven’t filed a death claim, you get ALL your money back that you’ve paid into the policy. Decker and I hem-ed and haw-ed for years about life insurance and how it’s “throwing our money away” because the likelihood of our death in the next 10-15 years is small. We like that this way we’re covered in the event of an accident and if not we still got that money back. It’s like a forced savings plan that gives the added bonus of a great payout if you kick the bucket sooner than you wished. Anyway, if you want to learn more about this plan (which is only offered through one insurance company that I know of and will be discontinued at the end of the year) give me a call and I’ll give you my agent’s name and number.

Since the temple GNO worked out so well last time, I am going to plan another one for August 27th. Hopefully by then everyone will be somewhat back to normal in their routine! Those who want can meet at my house at 6:00 PM, or you can meet us at the temple if that works better for you! Thanks so much and hope to see you there!

Albuquerque Family Photographer

Hi All!

At the end of May we had our family photos done by a great local photographer, Michelle Cortez. You can see some of the proofs from our shoot here. I had well over 70 printable images (we selected her "regular session") because my kids were having FUN! Yes, I said FUN...while having their photos taken!! Michelle is very laid back and my kids, who are normally very shy around new peeps, were totally relaxed with her. I know that the Gerhardt's, Gee's and I think the Falkner's had their photos done with her as well...don't just take my word for it, you can talk to them and get more feedback on their experience.

Anyways, she is putting out the dates for her fall "mini shoot sessions"...Christmas is just around the corner, people, get your photos done soon!! Here is the info from the email I received:

"Starting in September I will be booking a limited number of "mini shoots". These are available on a first come first serve basis. I am expecting a new baby early in November so I am trying to get as many pictures done before then since I don't know if I'll be doing any pictures in November at all.

Here's the info...
"Mini shoots" are 30 minute sessions for $50.00. The locations and times are already chosen you choose the date and place that best works for your family. Sessions must be paid for during booking. You can do that through paypal on my blog michellecortez.blogspot.com or you can mail a check to my home (contact Michelle for the address).

With each session you get to pick your favorite 10 images to be put on a disc in color and black and white for you to print as you like. You can also purchase additional images ($25.00/10 images in color and black and white).

Here's the dates:

Free boxes and packing material

I am in the process of unpacking 16000 lbs. I have boxes and packing material galore that is free for the taking. Hopefully, by the end of the week, I will have the boxes empty, and we will call to have them picked up by the movers, but if you need any boxes or packing material before then, they are free for the taking.

Also, would anyone be available to watch my three children tomorrow (Monday, August 3) while I go to a gynelogical appointment at 2:00? I would be happy to return the favor for you. Please let me know by e-mailing me at girlpowerjedi@hotmail.com
