Home daycare

A friend of mine is looking for a great home daycare for her baby (I think around 7 months old). I'm not exactly sure what her schedule is, but if anyone is interested email me at bnljustice (at) gmail (dot) com and I'll get you connected with her.

Thanks!

New Testament Quiet Books

Simply Fresh Designs created two more quiet books. The "Life of Christ" and "Teachings of Christ." Go here to dowload them. Or, email me at kesler999{at}msn{dot}com and I'll send you an invite to the Costco album that I created and you can order directly from the photo center at Costco.

GREAT Pest Control Company

It's that time of the year again...the bugs are out!!! I wanted to share a great pest control company that I have used. It's called Preventive Pest Control. Preventive is L.D.S. owned and operated. I've had these guys come out a few times and they have been fabulous...all the techs are very courteous and do a great job getting rid of those nasty creepy crawly things that seem to think my home is a safe haven. Ick!! They offer a one time service or a year contract which will save you a bit of money.

Entertainment Books

Hello all couponers! Entertainment books are only $15 and ship free. If you have a Shop at Home account you can get 40% cash back right now. If you don't have an account, I can order them for you. It would end up being $9 a book! There are 2 Smiths coupons for $5 off 50, so use those 2 and your book is already free.

If anyone is interested in how to do shop at home I can send you a link that will give you $5 off your first order, it is a little bit of a pain though.

Or email me and I will order them for you. Shipping is 10-14 business days so it will be at least 2 weeks. The books are good till November 1, 2011. That's 6 months to use them.

The 40% cash back goes till May 1st and then will probably be 20%. They will go on sale again though, they always do about this time of year. I have a book if you have any questions about what coupons are in it.

********
I had written this post yesterday and was waiting to hear back from the company to see if there was a limit and I just found out that they have a new sale 2 books for 25$ with 40% cash back. That would be $15 for 2 books after cash back!!! Check this link for more info.

Kool Aid Singles

We have been going through our 72-hour kits and learning a lot about the food we had in them and what we like/don't like. I highly recommend this exercise.

Anyway, one of the things we found is that KoolAid singles are not what we want to have to drink for every meal. Or really at all. We just aren't a KoolAid family. And we have 30 of these left over after finding this out. Half orange, half blue, and their expiration dates are all this spring (does kool aid go bad?), so the aren't for storing at this point.

If your family would use these please let me know (debbie at thewagers dot org, or I'm in the directory.)

Swimming Lessons

Since it is so hot today-hahaha- I thought you might be interested to know that swimming lesson pre-registration for the summer will begin on May 21 from 12-4 at the Paradise Pool. That is the closest one to us- I think. If you want to register for a different pool I would call 314-0418 to see where/when to sign up. If you are new to the area swim lessons are $25 for a 2 week session. They begin on June 7 and go till the end of July.

Ventana Neighborhood Recipe Blog!

Hi Ladies,
Remember when we kept asking and begging for recipes for a ward cook-book over the last many months?   We came to a decision recently to ditch the paper cook-book idea and do one online.  This has so many advantages, including the ability to add recipes to it indefinitely and include more people as we go too.  Also, since the ward split, we can now include the whole neighborhood seamlessly and not restrict the fun to a single ward.  Not to mention - the price is nice!

Kristie and I have been working on making the online "cook-book" as a recipe blog.  It's finally up and running.  There might be a bit of tweaking left to do, but the blog is now functional and ready to use.

Please go to Ventana Recipes  to view and use the new blog.  Please pay attention to the specific instructions on the sidebar there for using the blog - both for posting and finding recipes.  We want to keep it very organized so that recipes can be found easily (LABELS!!!) and also as private as possible, so please don't use last names.

One more important note.  Some of us have used this "helpingmysistas" blog to share recipes in the past.  You are still welcome to do that, but if you do, please post it on the recipe blog as well, since it will be more easily used in the future if it is there.

Also, we have done our best to get the recipes posted accurately.  If you come across something that looks like your recipe isn't right, please let us know!  I copied and pasted everything very quickly and didn't stop to do much proof-reading.  On that same note, we've included the first name and initial of the person who submitted the recipe, so you could also contact that person for further instructions if you are unsure or would like further instruction on a recipe.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and sent in recipes!  Everything looks very yummy.  No one has any excuses this week for not knowing what to cook for dinner :)

Selling a few things...

We are selling a few things. These little pretties no longer have a spot in our house.

2 Sealy Posturepedic box spring mattresses (perfect condition - as good as new, really) $50 each

A super nifty craft closet/desk or computer hutch. Open the doors and you'll find a desk that rolls out, several adjustable shelves, a rolling cork board, two drawers, and a light. All of the drawers and desk roll VERY smoothly. It is in great condition except the inside of the doors (as shown in the picture) have tape residue which could be removed. 60in tall, 34in wide and 23 1/2 in deep. $125

An Imaginarium train table. This is just the table NOT the pieces shown in the picture. The table is in excellent condition; literally, my kids never played with it. Has board on top that can flip to a solid green side and then a landscape picture side. Two drawers. $60

Call me if you are interested. Thanks

Chariot Cheetah Jogger and Bike Kit

I'm selling my Chariot Cheetah jogging stroller and the bike attachment kit that turns it into a bike trailer. The stroller looks new (don't judge me) and the only reason we're selling it is because we're getting a Chariot double jogger. I've ran with several different joggers and found the Chariot to be the most comfortable. It also makes a great bike trailer. It's aluminum frame makes it fairly lightweight. The weather kit allows you to completely enclose your kiddo if it's windy (like some places I know) or chilly. I have taken Lily out in 30 degree weather, snuggled up in blanket and jacket, and she's been toasty warm in there.

We're selling it for $325. Chariots are pretty spendy because of their high quality. Email me at tim dot sara dot rauch at gmail dot com if you're interested. Thanks!

Star Wars Camp

So, you all know how I feel about Star Wars. I was talking with my friend today, and lamenting the fact that a studio in town is charging $250! for a Star Wars camp and I suddenly realized, I COULD DO THAT! But, I am not going to charge $250. Yippee.

The camp will include Star Wars crafts and snacks, Jedi training (mind and body), Commando flight school, Galactic decoding, and more!

Camp will be the first week of August. (This will give us time to get our backyard in!)

August 1-5
ages 4-6 9:30-11:30
ages 7-9 2:00-4:00

Camp fee will be $75 ($25 due at registration to pay for supplies) and the remainder due the first day of camp. Camp fees will include: padawan outfit, choice of weapon (lightsaber or blaster, choice of good guy or bad guy) craft supplies and treats.

Contact Bethany at girlpowerjedi(at)hotmail(dot)com for registration form.

The "Woombie"

Where has this "Woombie" been all my mothering life? Has anyone seen this before? I saw it here first where there is a "Woombie" giveaway and a coupon code for 10% off your order. My babies always wanted to be swaddled, but always managed to wiggle out of blankets and even the actual wrap thing I bought that had velcro (can't remember the name...big waste of money). This thing looks awesome. Thought I'd share because it's similar to a sleeper. My kids have never managed to wiggle their arms out of a zipper and snap enclosure sleeper. Anyways, thought I'd share for all you ladies that are expecting. The website is here.

ASL Classes Again

Hey all! It seems like I better get this out there before everyone's schedules get filled up with other super fun things.

Last year, Kobe taught an ASL class and did a great job. He is an amazing signer. He has been doing it since he was born. But I was amazed at what a good teacher he was.

We are going to do it again this year.

For who: children ages 4-6, and  7-10.
When: Tuesdays (June 14 and 21) and two Thursdays (June 15, 22) for 45 minutes.
Cost: $25/child. If multiple family members, $20/child.

This year we will be including a DVD with the vocabulary that they learn so that they can practice and teach other family members, thus getting more practice.

Let me know if you are interested. (stef.burns at gmail.com). Spread the word along to your friends as well. We would love to have them! and you!!

(PS I will be present at all classes, in case you were wondering.)

Aerate anyone?

Brad is renting an aerater this weekend for our yard. (April 15th & 16th) (Aerating:  Puts little holes in the ground to for some air in it to help the grass grow better.) It is $90 if you rent one on your own for the day.  The last few times we have aerated it has worked out well because other families wanted their yard aerated too, and they went in on it, so it ended up being $20 a yard.  Brad is even willing to come over and do it for you, since the thing is a heavy bugger. So, let us know.  He can pick it up Friday afternoon.

Book club discussion leader needed!

Hi Book club ladies,

I have a friend coming into town, she's going to be staying with me and she doesn't want to go to book club. So can someone else take over leading the Hobbit discussion for me? I'm sad to miss it. Thanks, Renee' W.

Seeds, seeds, and more seeds

A couple weeks ago I posted the link for Seeds of Change and their big seed giveaway. Well, mine arrived yesterday, and I was blessed with a bounty I'd love to share if someone needs seeds.

Specifically, I have 5 packets of tomato seeds, all different varieties, to add to the two varieties (around 15 plants each) I've already got sprouting in my kitchen. I think this is too many tomato plants even for me. I had already been planning to share my seedlings, so let me know if you like to grow tomatoes.

Then there are the flowers. I've heard of California poppies (hm, it says 'medicinal'; I never knew that.) and marigolds (pinwheel variety--heirloom it says) before, but I also have seeds for eryngium blaukappe, Jerusalem sage, red flame celosia, orange granade safflower, and calabrian soapwort. The pictures look pretty, but if someone has a favorite among these let me know.

Peppers. I know this is New Mexico, and I'm learning to enjoy a little jolt in my dinner, but I have started a packet of bell pepper seeds already and now I have a paprika and a criolla sella chile pepper packet. I'd be happy with maybe 1 or 2 plants of each.

Pumpkins. Um, last year we didn't even carve a pumpkin (the two I bought ended up on the compost pile. This packet of Jack-o-lite pumpkin seeds should go to a family that wants "8-15 lb." pumpkins.

Cumin. An interesting novelty item for me, but maybe a favorite staple for someone else?

Even if everything I've mentioned gets taken, I'll still be left with melons, squash, onions, leeks, radishes, and 4 varieties of leafy greens, so don't be shy! I'm in the directory (Ventana Ward) or you can email me at debbie at thewagers dot org. If I end up growing all this stuff you'll surely be hearing from me again!

Alterations

I am in need of someone who can do some alterations on a suit. I am not a seamstress and Aaron needs a suit altered. The only catch is that we need it by Thursday. I will pay or trade or whatever. Email me at aaronandjenparkin{at}yahoo{dot}com.

Printer Cartridges

I have brand new hp 61 black and 61 tri color printer cartridges that I bought thinking they were the right ones and opened to find out they are not- Ooops! If anyone has a printer that uses these you can have them for free. Just email me at sarahewmartin at gmail dot com. Thanks!

Please keep them in your prayers

For all you long time members of the Ventana Ward you might remember Ken and
Julie Sensanbaugher.  They had 3 little boys and lived in the same home that
Richardsons lived in.  There sweet little Gavin (7) passed away this Saturday,
April 9.  This past week he came down with flu like symptoms, but nothing too
serious at first.  He ended up going into cardiac arrest which caused severe
brain damage.  Surgery didn't help and he passed away today.  You can go to
www.caringbridge.org/visit/sensanbaugher to read their journal about the week
and to leave a message for them.

Portable clothing rack?

This is a long shot but I'm wondering if anyone has a portable clothing rack I can borrow for a couple days next week. Something like this: Please let me know via email: anmfrost(at)hotmail(dot)com and I will come pick it up. I need it for Monday and Tuesday. Thanks! Monique F.

Avent Bottle Sterilizer

Hello Ladies,
I have an Avent Bottle Sterilizer that holds 6 Avent bottles (or similar size and shape, I would imagine) and can be used in the microwave. Early on in Lily's life I decided that what with the amount of times a day she was licked by our dog in the face, sterilizing her bottles in addition to washing them was kind of pointless. But perhaps you like to sterilize, and I commend you for that. Anyway, it's free, it's brand new in the box, please take it off my hands or it's going to the Salvation Army. Email me at tim dot sara dot rauch at gmail dot com.

Sale on children's winter clothing

I just wanted to mention that Wal-Mart is having a sale on their children's winter clothing. I grabbed a ton of fleece and thermal pajamas for Averi for only $1 each. They had some adorable toddler shoes for $3, and several other cute things for just a few dollars (or less!). Definitely worth checking it out to see if there are any basics to stock up on.

An Alternative

I have been tossing this idea around for a while and figured I would just go for it.

I love to read. All kinds of books. If I could read all day I would. Okay, not entirely true. I would also sleep some and eat an embarrasing amount of chocolate. But I would definitely read more than I do.

There. I have said it.
My name is Stefanie Burns and I am a slow reader.

If I am going to read a book, it has to be something that interests me and that I can see myself finishing in the 10 minute increments in the restroom that are available to me.

With that being said, I am going to start an alternative book club. I have been really nervous about how to approach this because I really don't want to offend anyone. I know there is already an established book club. One I attend. Often. (Okay, not lately. Dang work.)

Sadly, I am rarely ever able to finish the books. Again, slow reader.

This new book club will meet the second Tuesday of every month in the evening. That way you can attend both book clubs if you want. Then there is no conflict.

So the first meeting will be May 10th at 7:30pm at my house. We are going to be reading "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. It won the Newbery award in 1994. Here is a synopsis of the book (thank you wikipedia):

The Giver is a 1993 soft science fiction novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a future society which is at first presented as a utopian society and gradually appears more and more dystopian. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the twelfth year of his life. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan which has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of "Receiver of Memory," the person who stores all the memories of the time before Sameness, in case they are ever needed to aid in decisions that others lack the experience to make. When Jonas meets the Giver, he is confused in many ways. The Giver is also able to break some rules, such as turning off the speaker and lying to people of the community. As Jonas receives the memories from the previous receiver—the "Giver"—he discovers the power of knowledge. The people in his community are happy because they don't know of a better life but the knowledge of what they are missing out on could create chaos. He faces a dilemma: Should he stay with the community, his family living a shallow life without love, color, choices and knowledge or should he run away to where he can live a full life?
If this interests you, let me know.

Book Club genre change, next lineup

At the last book club meeting it was proposed that we re-vamp the genres of books we read and their order of appearance in the que. We also selected the following books to discuss. Hopefully this will allow people to read at their own pace and grab books as they find them for good prices (can we say Amazon Super Saver shipping?)

In an effort to save space (and keep it brief for people less interested) I have posted short synopses/reviews of each book at the official blog of our book club at http://youvegottoreadthisbook.blogspot.com

FYI These books and categories were selected by the majority of people in attendance (if you don't like it I'm sorry! I'm just the messenger!)

Does anyone volunteer to lead discussions for the needed books?

Many thanks to all you awesome ladies who make Book Club so fun.
Melissa

Great price for kids table and chairs

I was at the Costco on Montano today and saw that they have marked down their little white table and chairs set to $60!  That is a GREAT price for one of these sets, and one that looks like pretty good quality too...  trust me I know since I searched all over for one last year!  They are down the sports isle (with the playset, bikes, etc.) at the end of the isle.
