Pregnancies

I was talking to Anneliese M. and she had the best idea to put everyone that is pregnant on the side bar and when they are due!  I thought that was a good idea because it is really hard to keep track of everyone that is pregnant.  I won't add you unless you want to be on there.  :)  So e-mail me or comment here if you want to be added!  foreverfamilee (at) gmail (dot) com

staying connected with past ward members

Decker has a ton of scout pics from the past 4 years of being scout master and we are compiling them onto a DVD to give to all his old scouts. I know several families with scout age boys have moved out and I don't know how to contact them (and sometimes it takes people awhile to respond to a friend request on facebook, if they indeed do facebook.) Anyhow, here is my request.
1) Do you have any scout pics you want to put in the pile?
2) Do you have either an email/phone or address for the following families who were in our ward:
Pucketts
Wrights (in AK?)
Hoefferle

original book club lineup

Here are the books for the next few months.
August 18- A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
September 15- Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
October 20- Blink by Malcolm Gladwell

Do we have any volunteers to lead the discussions for any of these books? Also, we need a host location for the October meeting (unless the weather cooperates and you want to bring jackets for a last outdoor meeting)

Card Swap Anyone??

Hello all! My name is Crescent and I just recently moved into the neighborhood...I wanted to get a card swap up and going if anyone was interested. I did this in Buffalo for a couple years before we moved here and absolutely loved it. Here's how it works: We decide on a card theme for the month, for example, Thank You cards. Then we see how many people want to do the swap that month, let's pretend 10 do. After that, you get your creativity on while you make 10 Thank You cards to swap (all the same design). Then we meet together one evening for dessert and girl talk and swap cards so you go home with 10 amazing cards, all unique and different! Sound like fun? Email me and let me know if you have any questions or if you are interested!
crescentmarchant (at) gmail (dot) com.

Oh and you don't have to be committed every month. If one month you want to do it and the next month you can't, that's just fine. Or if you want to make the cards, but can't make it to the swap, just send them to the swap with someone else, that's okay too!

Ventana Ranch Elementary update

Tiffany's question led me to post a few things I know (I am the new PTA president, and have met with the principal.) As many of you know the previous principal transferred to a new school. The vice principal, Drew Dooley will be taking her place.

Meet the teacher will be August 12th from 12:30-2 p.m. Kinders will be assigned either the 16th or the 17th to attend 1/2 day. Their first full day will be the 18th.

Kindergarten Schedule

My daughter Bailey starts Kindergarten this Fall. I keep looking at the Ventana Ranch Elementary website and it says that school starts on August 16 for grades 1-5. I know that the Kindergarten kids have a week that they have a different schedule to get used to school. Does anyone know this schedule and what day it starts?

Let me know if you have more information than I do. :)

Busy Mom Book Club: The Help

Hey all!

In an attempt to be less confusing as to which book club we are talking about, we are naming this book club "The Busy Mom Book Club." Don't laugh.

Bethany, thanks for the fun reading of "Secrets of the Jedi." It was fun, it was enlightening, and now I can understand Kobe a little more. Heh.

Next month, Susan Turner has chosen "The Help" by Katherine Stockett. This book is coming out in the theatres soon, if it isn't already there. Here is a synopsis:

The Help is set in the early 1960s in Jackson Mississippi, and is told from the perspective of 3 people, Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter. Aibileen is an African-American maid who cleans houses and cares for the young children of various white families. During the time covered in the novel, she has a job looking after a toddler girl named Mae Mobley, her first job since her own 24-year-old son was killed in an on-the-job accident.

Minny, Aibileen's confrontational friend who frequently tells her employers what she thinks of them, which has resulted in her being fired from 19 jobs. Her most recent employer was Mrs. Walters, mother of Hilly Holbrook. Hilly is the social leader of the community, and head of the Junior League, the lady you do not want to cross in Jackson Mississippi. She will become the nemesis for all three main characters in the book.

Miss "Skeeter" Eugenia Phelan is the daughter of a prominent white family that owns a large cotton farm that employs many African-Americans in the fields, as well as in the household. Skeeter has just finished college and come home with big dreams of becoming a writer. However, her mother only wishes for Skeeter to get married, something that does not particularly interest Skeeter. Upon coming home Skeeter discovers that Constantine, the maid that raised her, has suddenly quit, and moved to Chicago with no word to Skeeter. This was unusual since Constantine had been writing to Skeeter the entire time she was at college, and had promised Skeeter a surprise when she got home. This is a mystery that nobody will discuss with Skeeter. The Help reveals Skeeter's personal struggles with her friends and family throughout.

During the weekly bridge club that Skeeter attends with Hilly, Mrs. Walters and Elizabeth, Abileen's employer, Hilly discusses her belief that all homes should have separate bathroom facilities for the "colored" help. This discussion has an impact on Skeeter. She is awakened to the realization that her friends' maids are treated so different from the way a white person is treated, and wants to reveal the truth to the world from the maids' perspectives by writing a book about it.

Written in the first person from the perspective of Abileen, Minny and Skeeter, the struggles Skeeter experiences to communicate to the maids and gain their trust is revealed, as well as the issues of overcoming long standing barriers in customs and laws by all of the characters. The daily lives of the Southern housewife, and the household maid during the early 1960's in Mississippi are explored. The dangers of undertaking writing a book about African-Americans speaking out in the early 60's are constantly hovering over the 3 ladies. The ultimate results are heart breaking at times, and humorous at times, and unpredictable.

Can't wait.

This month, we are meeting at Susan's house, Aug 18th at 12:30pm. (Thanks to everyone being willing to switch days and times so that I can come.) We know this is the same day as the other book club, but we figured it was doing the day so there would be no conflict.

Hope to see you all there.

Help with Roman Shades

Hi! I am new to this blog! I have a good amount of sewing experience, and I am wanting to make some roman shades for my baby's nursery who is due is 4 weeks. I have cut out one of the shades, and need to get some of the hardware, but I am very intimidated on this project. I have never made curtains. I make mostly clothing and quilts. If there is anyone who has experience with roman shades and is willing to 'help a sister out' can you contact me? I would love to have one up and done before he is born. I would be so happy to return the favor and help someone with something the need, too! Give me a call at 505-781-9049 or email me at

Win Cars 2 movie tickets!!!

You can win 2 Cars 2 movie tickets on Facebook by going to Walmart's page and liking them. Then click on Mater's Secret Mission on the left and make a secret code to send to a Facebook friend. When you send it you will win something, coloring page, game online, etc. If you try right at the top of the hour they give away a limited number of $7.50 movie tickets. It took me about 20 tries over the top of 6 different hours, maybe 15 minutes of my time to win twice. If you don't win by 5 after the hour, stop trying till the next hour. This ends on July 14th so don't wait. Go here for more information. Reading through the comments it seems almost everyone wins eventually. Good luck!

Thursday is France and Saturday is the United Kingdom. Click on the countries flag for the date and what they are making.

Recommendations wanted!

Hi everyone! I'm Tiffany Cardon and I just moved in to the Ventana Ranch Ward. I'm just getting everything situated here with moving and one of the last things on my list was to find insurance and a pediatrician. I was wondering if any of you ladies wouldn't mind commenting or emailing me any recommendations you had on where to go. I would really, really appreciate it!

Especially wondering what everyone does for maternity coverage? I can't find anywhere that will cover it

Citrus!

If you missed the recipe group, you missed out on some pretty amazing stuff. But not to worry. We will have most the recipes here or here.

Next month we are doing any recipe that includes lemons or limes or oranges. Basically citrus. Try something new. Make something old. Could be a appetizer could be a main dish. Heck, it could be a dessert. Who doesn't love a dessert. Just bring it to share.

Bethany Ostler will let us know the exact date as August approaches.

Oh, yeah. One more thing. If you came today, send me your recipe to stef.burns at gmail.com. If you didn't come, but have a great appetizer you want to share, you can email me too.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!!

Anyone want to adopt a bunny?

Sam and I found a domestic bunny in our garden. I haven't had any luck finding his owners. I believe he was set free. We have him in our home right now but we can't keep him. I contacted the local House Rabbit Society but they can't take him. I'd rather not have to take him to the animal shelter so I'm looking for a home for him. He's super sweet and great with my kids.

Would anyone like to adopt him? Give me a call if you would like to meet him.

Art class reminder

Just a reminder... My Mixed Media art class is starting soon. Join us if your crazy summer schedule will let you! Please let me know by Friday, July 8th.
Thanks, Rachael B.

Mixed Media
Dates: July 11, 13, 18, 20
Time: 10:00 -11:30am
Cost: $45 per child
*Open to children 5 years old and older who are interested in learning art.

In this session you will learn out-of-the-box art skills while exploring a more contemporary flare to art by using several media for one piece of artwork: paint, paper, sealers, glue, pens... This will push you to create what is not "typical". The goal will be to produce 2 or 3 pieces of artwork that you are proud of. We'll use brushes, sponges, fingers and fabric to apply our media. It's gonna be fun and super messy so bring your own cover-up and wear old clothes.

Dog sitter anyone?

We are going out of town this Friday, until the next Friday. July 8th-15th. Does anyone want to watch our dog for us? Our dog Millie loves to be around people, and loves kids and babies. She is very easy going and naps a lot during the day. She is not a barker....only when someone rings the door bell. Since she is an indoor dog, we need a family to take her to their house. She doesn't need to be inside at your place (as long as she has shade and her blanket)....but she will be lonely if she was left at our house alone. (she likes to know someone is there) She doesn't play fetch or anything, but loves to snuggle. (Millie looks like the "Target" dog...with the brown spot around the eye.)

We will pay $40. If you are interested, contact us at rogersareblessed(at)gmail(dot)com or Andrea R. from our phone number is in ward directory.
