Renee's Fancy Mac and Cheese Correction
I apologize if you tried this and your sauce didn't thicken!  Sorry, I really just dumped ingredients in, messed with it til I liked it and guessed later.  Start with 4 cups of milk and and wait til it thickens, you'll probably need more, maybe up to six cups, to make it a nice creamy consistency.  It will thicken a little as you bake it.  I will test it myself and re-post my findings. Darn, more mac' n' cheese in my future:-)

    waffle iron

Does anyone have this kind of waffle iron I can borrow next weekend? Please email me at bnljustice (at) gmail (dot) com or call 4.4.9 7871 if you're willing to lend it out for the day bnljustice (at) gmail (dot) com. I would appreciate it so much!!

    Power Washer

    Hi There!
I am in need of a power washer to clean some old barn wood and thought I would first ask here (before I go rent one) to see if anyone had one that they would be willing to lend out...??  I wouldn't need it for too long, just a day or so, and it doesn't need to be a huge fancy one.  I just want to make sure this old wood is clean before it goes up in my home.  If you have any info or know of someone who might have a connection to one-please let me know! I really appreciate it!

       * 6 Tb flour
       * 8 c. milk
       * 7 t. salt (or to taste)
       * 1/8 t. ground pepper
       * 1/2 lb Velveeta (cut into 1" cubes)

       * 1 lb elbow macaroni

Preheat oven to 350.  Heat water for pasta, cook until done, then drain and let sit. Stir in a tablespoon of butter to prevent clumping. Photography Class

Just a reminder that we are having the intro to photography class at Rochelle D.'s house tomorrow night (Thursday, May 24th) at her house. Remember to bring you camera as well as the manual that goes with it. Hope to see you there!
Before this baby is born, I need to get a camera, and not just use my cell phone.  I know a lot of people have upgraded to knew cameras with all you good bloggers, and are great photographers.  I was wondering if anyone had a decent camera, maybe a few years old, I could buy from them, before I run to Target and pay retail. I'm totally good with a used one.  I haven't had a camera in a few years, since my last one stopped working.  :)Thanks!

Just a friendly reminder ...June 4th is the last day to register for my summer art classes

I am excited to announce my lineup of art classes for this summer. I am holding 3 classes. Here are the details:

To register, send me an email to confirm that your child will be attending. (Rachael Boyle - rachaelboyle(at)gmail(dot)com) Please include their name and age and which class they will attend.  A $30 NONREFUNDABLE deposit (per child per camp) will need to be mailed to me (please email me if you need my home address) OR delivered to my house within a WEEK after registering. The $30 will be applied to the total cost of the class, the remainder of the total cost will be due on the first day of class.

The deadline to register for ALL classes is June 4th! Don't miss out, register early!

There needs to be a minimum of 6 children registered per class otherwise I will likely cancel that particular class. So invite your friends!

On the other hand, if a camp becomes too full, I will split it and create a second group.

If your child would like to participate in one of these camps but your schedule does not allow it, please let me know. If I have enough interested children I will hold another camp at a different date.

As a side note, I will begin teaching semi-private art classes in the fall. If you are interested, please let me know.

And here's the summer camp lineup ...!

Skillful Drawing and Painting - Training The Artist's Eye

I am going to tell you a secret. Shhhh. To more easily paint/draw a beautiful masterpiece of something, you need to break it up and look at it in terms of colors, shapes, and lines! Wa la! Instant success, and that's what I want to teach you in this class. What "really" makes a picture? Training the artist's eye!

Acrylic paints on canvass, watercolors on cold pressed paper, and black and white charcoal/chalk on black and white drawing paper will be our tools to create our 3 masterpieces.

If you attended last year, our approach will be similar to the approach we used when we painted the picture of the boat docked on the beach with the shimmering sunset.  (It won't be the same photo again, but it was very helpful for the children to reference a photo.) I taught the group what to look for, then I walked around and helped each child individually. It was very successful and each child was VERY proud of their work.

This class is appropriate for children 7 years of age and older.

    June 11, 13, and 15th, 3 days

    10am - 12am each day

Cost is $75 per child. Includes all materials. Child is responsible for bringing their own cover-up.

Window Splashes: Promotional Signs and Holiday Art on Home and Business Windows

You know those cute holiday pictures or those neon promotional signs you see on business windows? Well I am going to show you how they're done.

Window painting is super fun! But it is also takes planning and can be technical. In this class, you will use acrylic paints at first, BUT once you've practiced, you'll learn how to transfer your design to big windows and use very high quality paints (that are special ordered), expensive brushes, and very smelly chemicals like turpentine and other oil solvents.

Here's the best part, we will paint Dairy Queen's windows, located on Southern Blvd., for the Fourth of July Rio Rancho parade! Everyone will see it from the road! That's right, you'll be famous! Plus, after our hard work, Dairy Queen is going to treat all of the hot and tired artist to ice-cream!

This class is appropriate for children ages 8 and older and who want to be a part of something BIG!

    June 18-22

    Time: 5pm-6:30 pm

Cost is $100 per child. Includes all materials. Child is responsible for bringing their own cover-up and bottled water.

More details will be emailed to those who register for this class.

    Splatter, Stick, and Stain

This is your get messy, make messy, messy here, messy there, messy EVERYWHERE type of camp for children who like to have fun and create. But before we start, I will read a different book at the beginning of each day that will go along with our project for that day. Your child will enjoy listening to the book and thinking outside of the box while incorporating real art skills and learning about famous artists. Everyday we will create a new piece of artwork for your child to take home and proudly display!

This class is appropriate for children entering kindergarten in the fall to 8 years old. Come get your mess on with us!

    June 25-28

    2pm-3pm

Cost is $60 per child. Includes all materials. Child is responsible for bringing their own cover-up.

I can't wait! We are going to have super fun and I am looking forward to seeing all of my returning artists and new ones! Here's to splattered paint, black charcoal smudges on our faces, fingers stuck together, colored soaked cover-ups, and messy floors!

    lunch & chatting about parenting

Mark your calendars for next Thursday, May 31st from 11:30-1:30 for a fun day at my house. We're going to have a lunch party potluck style and then chat about parenting ideas such as; teaching your kids to work (I have specific ideas for ages 2+), keeping your house clean, allowances, chores, disciplining, etc. Some people asked me some of my tricks and I'd like to hear the same from the rest of you. (I also picked Michelle English's brain many a conversation to see how that amazing woman worked and will happily spill her secrets as well.) Kids are welcome. Hope you can come! Jon Barrie for Senate

Dear Patriots, LDS Members, Friends & Neighbors, In this critical election year, as New Mexico goes so goes the nation. My campaign for U.S. Senate is fast approaching the extraordinary goal of securing the required voter names on the petition to get on the ballot. It is an unfair roadblock for those offering an alternative voice to the duopoly of political parties. That may be election business as usual, but New Mexico—America—can no longer afford a closed shop when it comes to the way government is run. Independents must be on the front lines. That’s why I need your help. If the power elites are to be beaten at their own game, then I hope all Patriots will invest in my grass roots campaign as a commitment to liberty. Consider where I stand … There are no candidates who will say that the state and individual freedoms and sovereign rights must comply with the Bill of Rights. The First Presidency acknowledged that wisdom when they gave us the guideline a few years ago of supporting political candidates “who are truly dedicated to the Constitution in the tradition of our Founding Fathers.” (Deseret News, November 2, 1964.) My campaign for U.S. Senate depends on help from all righteous people like you. The campaign needs additional petition signatures for me to be on the ballot in November. We are also in need of donations, no matter how small. This is a grassroots campaign and requires all of the support we can get from people like you. I will offer true Christian constitutional representation in the senate. This principle of allegiance to the Constitution is basic to our freedom. It is one of the great principles that distinguishes this ‘land of liberty’ from other countries.” (Improvement Era, July 1940, p. 444.) I am asking for your time and donations in this effort to prevent established politicians that do not have our interests at heart from being elected. Please visit my website at www.jonbarrieforsenate.com and print out a copy of the petitions and if you have time have your friends and neighbors sign. Even if you have only one signature that is okay, you can mail them to me, or hand deliver them to either Andrea Rogers or Melanie Hyland (Ventana Ward.) My chief motivation for public service is my grandchildren. My 11 year old twin Granddaughters’ developed a slogan that is very true “He loves the USA just like he loves his granddaughters” I want a better life for them. I was a parent of a special needs child and will donate ½ of my senatorial salary to children with disabilities in New Mexico. The warning of the President Joseph Fielding Smith is most timely: “Now I tell you it is the people of the United States were waking up with the understanding that if they don’t save the Constitution from the dangers that threaten it, we will have a change of government.” (Conference Report, April 1950, p. 159.) In my opinion, 2012 is the most important election year any of us have ever seen. I urge you to get involved in any way you can including forwarding this message Patriots, friends and family. “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.” John Adams ~ October 2, 1780 Thanks and God Bless, Jon Barrie

    Hunger Games Trilogy for sale

We went down to that scholastic book club sale that was 25- 50% off books......loved it! Only problem, the kids got lots of book, there was a set that I didn't filter. It is above Larsen, our 12 yr.old son. The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mocking Jay by Suzanne Collins. I think I can go get my money back, but I don't want to drive across town. We got them as a set for $16.99. If you buy them individually anywhere they are $9.99 each. So, if you want them, let me know. Larsen bought them with his own money, and hasn't even opened them up. Thanks, Andrea rogersareblessed(at)gmail(dot)com

Learning to Pray in SIgn Language

Yes, it's true. I wasn't gonna, but decided I am. Or at least I might.

I am considering having a week long (5 days, one hour each) crash course on praying (both signing and interpreting) in ASL. This class would be taught by me. It would be free. And it would be for anyone 12 years and older.

    We would learn:
    Praying Etiquette
    ABC's
    The words of prayer
    Gospel related words
    People we pray for
    Other needed words
How to interpret all of these things.
    Plus more....

Why prayer? I know when I went into the MTC, the first thing that we learned was to pray in sign language. It doesn't require another person to practice...well, I guess you are speaking to God so he counts, but he doesn't sign back to you. Praying is something we do everyday...multiple times. I think it is this repetition that helps us remember things. Plus it is prayer. There is some amazing power in that, right?

I am pretty sure this class can help with some Personal Progress or Duty to God/Scouting requirements. I am not quite sure why I keep feeling to do this class...my life is pretty crazy right now, but I am. So I am just going to put this out there...in case there are people interested.

So, is there anyone interested in a class like this? Would any of your kids?

Email me: stef.burns -at- gmail.com or call me 816-eight zero seven four

    Intro to Photogarphy

Okay ladies, so here is the first attempt at the mini classes for the summer. I had several people tell me they wanted to learn more about photography and how to use their camera. Rochelle Divett has been sweet enough to offer her expertise in this area, and she will be hosting a class next Thursday (May 24) at her house at 7:30. Please bring your cameras as well as the user manuals so that she can help you become more familiar with it. Also, please email me if you are planning on coming (I just want to make sure the time works out so that Rochelle will be teaching more than just me).

Thanks! Hope to see you there!

A HOME IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD BURNT DOWN

    Hi Ladies,

On Saturday a home on the street behind us burnt down. The home is unfit to live in now and will be torn down at some point. Two sisters lived there with their children (2 sisters, 5 kids total). They are both single parents. Nearly everything was lost.

I spoke with one of the ladies yesterday as she gathered up what ever she could salvage. She just lost her job and her grandmother; she was very overwhelmed with all of her recent lost.

I am trying to find out what the PTA can do to help and other organizations, but I feel like we need to help too.

It is not certain what they can salvage as far as furniture goes. Most of it burnt or is ruined due to the smoke. Right now, they are currently staying in a Motel 8 that the Red Cross put them in. She especially needs food, like non perishables and snack food, with bottles of water. They think they will be able to save their coffee table, kitchen table and a few other small pieces. But they will need new mattresses and sofas just to name a few.

I have started to collect food, furniture donations, money, toys, and clothes in my garage.

If you can help donate, please call me or drop anything off on my front doorstep.  Thank you a ton, let's help these families get back on their feet!

    Tony Hillerman Dress Code Change

Just FYI next years dress code for Hillerman might be changing. They are looking at having polos with no logos at all and only in the schools colors. Sweatshirts from Hillerman, Volcano Vista and Cibola only. I am not sure of the other changes they are looking at. I just thought any of you who were shopping ahead for next year might like a heads up. This is not for sure, but it looks likely that they will change the dress code some. You could try calling the school for information.

    Swimming Lessons at Paradise Pool

Swimming Lesson sign ups are at the Paradise Pool on Saturday May 19th from 10-2.

    Mini Continuing Education Classes

I am putting this idea out there to see if anyone would be interested in some fun “classes” this summer. A lot of you have talents or skills that are fabulous, and I know there are even more people who want to learn from them. I was thinking it would be cool to organize a series of little classes on random subjects that other women want to learn about, and then find people in the ward/area willing to teach us about them. I have a few ideas, but I would love suggestions of other areas to cover as well: photography, cooking techniques and tips, child development, organization, cleaning, art (technique and/or appreciation), history, music (introduction to reading music or music appreciation), home decorating, cake decorating, flower arranging, sewing, etc. I would love to have input on what people would be interested in learning more about, and I can try and find someone who would be willing to give a class on the subject. (I am afraid the only real skill I can contribute to this is in ultrasound, but if anyone wants a quick intro to learning how to read and understand their OB ultrasounds, I would love to teach a little mini class on it.)

Please email me if this is something you would be interested in – whether for attending classes or teaching. I can work on finding times that work the best for people and finding teachers as well.

    Thanks! Andrea T. (andrea326[at]gmail[dot]com)

Youth Nights at the Santa Fe Opera

The Santa Fe opera is doing their youth nights again this summer. I went last year because I've ALWAYS wanted to go the Santa Fe Opera and this is an affordable way to do it, plus expose your kids to great music. (I was so impressed, by the way. This opera is world famous and worth going to at least once in your life-time.) Here's the deal- they have two nights that are available for the shows. They're doing "Tosca" Monday June 25th and "The Pearl Fishers" on Tuesday June 26th. (These are dress rehearsals but I couldn't tell that it was one last time- they ran straight through perfectly). The cost is $16 for adults and $8 for kids. Here's a catch- you have to buy tickets in packages (1 adult, 2 kids or 2 adults, 3 kids with extra kid tickets available..... you must bring the kids ages 6+.)You have to buy your tickets over the phone by calling 1-800-280-4654. Plus they offer a free chartered bus ride to and from the ABQ Lowe's on 1-25 at Paseo. (Space is limited and you have to reserve your seats by speaking with the people at the ABQ opera guild at 792-6869 x. 104) The bus I believe leaves ABQ around 5 PM and brings you back around midnight. There are picnic tables up there and we brought a dinner to eat alfresco. There is also a great pre-show talk that is kid friendly that helps them know what the show is about. Also, there are little screens by each seat that translate what they're singing into English. The opera is an open air theater and the shows start at sundown, around 9 PM. There are more details here at http://www.santafeopera.org/communityactivities/youthprograms/youthnights.aspx Advice- read the opera synopses on their website before you choose which one you want to see. My girls LOVED going last year and we're planning on doing the Tuesday show this year if anyone else wants to tag along. Questions? email me at melissa dot lee dot spencer at gmail dot com

VRW Walking Trails Board Meeting Reminder

Just a reminder that the meeting is tonight!

Are you tired of lifting strollers and bikes over boulders to pass through the walking trails in VRW or have you simply stopped using them due to the barriers?  If you answered YES!, you are not alone.  The VRW HOA Board will hear our position at the next board meeting scheduled on Monday, May 7th at 6:30 pm at the HOAMCO office located at 9798 Coors Rd NW, Building A (north of Irving on east side of Coors).  I realize this is FHE night, so why not take the opportunity to teach your kids about civic responsibilities and bring them along.  Also, photos of your walking path obstacles are encouraged (can’t make it… send me your photos at martinnwnm5(at)gmail(dot)com).  Hope to see you there!

    Science Camp!

Many people seemed interested in the science camp my girls are doing this summer.  If you are still interested, but haven't registered yet, they really need you to do so.   I just got this e-mail from the Tierra Antigua PTA:

"Camp Invention is the perfect way to keep your child exploring, learning, and having fun over the summer. We've been very lucky to host the camp here at Tierra Antigua. So far this year the enrollment is down and we need more students to register to keep the camp open. Scholarship funds are still available from Sandia Labs, and if we don't use it we lose it. Please spread the word for anyone who might be interested. Camp Invention is June 4-8 from 9am-3:30pm."

I imagine if you call the school they can tell you how to take advantage of the scholarships. Or, you can just register online http://inventnow-web.ungerboeck.com/programsearch/moreinfo.aspx?event=5487

It would be so sad to lose this program from the school because of lack of participation.  It is a national program and it is so cool that we can participate right here in our own neighborhood.  Go sign up your geeks!!

    Thanks :)

    Election Day

The Primary Election Day for us is June 5th (this is gonna be a big one!), but if you don't like waiting in the long lines to vote (or if you are moving right then, like me...), you can go to www.bernco.gov to request an absentee ballot.  Just click on the green exclamation point in the middle of the home page.  Fill in your voter info, then scroll down to the tab for the "Absentee Ballot by Mail" and follow the directions!  That way, when your ballot arrives, you can just fill it in at your leisure and send it off, or drop it off.  And while your at it, order a ballot for your husband too!
