Anyone want to aerate?

We've got an infestation of poa annua in our lawn, and we need to aerate. To rent an aerator from Home Depot is about $45 for four hours. Anyone miss aerating earlier in the spring that needs to do so now? We'd love to split the cost. Ideally we'd rent it tomorrow morning, but we can be flexible. Let me know by leaving me a comment or emailing me at chelsey DOT jorgensen AT gmail DOT com.

Help please!

A new family is moving into the ward this evening and we were hoping to see if anyone else would be willing to help. We will be helping them starting at 6pm and the more people we can get the faster it will go! Please have your husbands call me (see the ward directory) if they are able to help and I can give them the address information.
Thanks,
Chad W.

Anyone need a trampoline repair?

I'm so excited about this trampoline repair place I found. I have called all over town, looked on-line to repair, and everyone wants you to just buy a new mat...which is at least $100-$150. I found a place in Albuquerque..called Alameda Upholstery that will repair the trampoline. I had 7 straps break off (since we have the whole neighborhood that likes to come over and jump) Anyways, it's only $1 a strap to sew and fix....so with 7 straps....only $7. That beats buying a new mat!
Here is the place 6216 2nd St. NW and number is 898-2691-Alameda Upholstery

ABQ on the CHEAP

Wanna know some of the cheap, free, discounted things going on around Albuquerque.

Visit: Albuquerque On The Cheap. You can sign up for daily emails that tell you what is going on around the ABQ metro area.

I am not good at couponing or knowing the deals. Kristie and Susan rock in that arena. But there is my small contribution.

2 more days of school! (Unless your last name is the same as mine then you only have one day...we are ditchers..) Then it is party time!!

If you have some little runners in your family, we are doing the Hershey track meet and meet at Volcano Vista's track at 4:ish on Tuesdays. Even if your kids don't want to compete, it is fun to just have a huge track to run or ride around on and grass to play.

Come join the fun!

Albuquerque Century

Hey all you cycling fans. My husband, David, is doing the Albuquerque Century bike ride on Saturday, June 5th. The ride is a huge 100 mile loop around Albuquerque. If you want to do the ride, it's open registration right now. After May 31st you have to pay late fees. It looks like there are also 25, 50, and 65 mile options as well as a family 10k if you want to ride with your kids.

Click here to go to the website for more info including the map of the ride.

If you look at the map, the 100 mile riders will ride eastbound on Paseo and turn south on Universe about 1/2 way through the ride . We're figuring that will be about 9am. I'm going to set up a little Daddy cheering station at the corner of Paseo and Universe. Come hang out with us if you want to watch the cyclists go by! Bring some chairs and some breakfast maybe? :-)

If you want to ride w/David, let us know.
Thanks!
Michelle Chapman

Kids Bowl Free!

I am ALWAYS looking for fun stuff to do with my kids especially during the summer months. I came across a blog post last week that I thought I'd share (although I can't remember what blog I saw this on)!! There are bowling alley's across the country that are participating in this program. Unfortunately, there is only one bowling alley in New Mexico that is participating and it is across town. If you sign your kids up they can bowl two free games everyday through the rest of summer. The only catch is that you have to pay a $2 shoe rental per child at each visit. Hours are 12-7pm on weekdays and 12-5pm on weekends. It is still a super great deal though! The few times our family has gone bowling in the last couple of years it has cost us around $50 for lane and shoe rental.

They also have a program where mom and dad can purchase a pass for $24.95 and use it all summer along with the kids...$2 shoe rental applies again though!

I have signed my kids up, received the daily passes via email, but have not had the opportunity to attend yet. I have no idea what Leisure Lanes is like so if you go and it is a terrible place (please don't shoot the messenger!!), pass the word along. Still though...it's worth it even if you go only one time this summer!

There may be hope!

This is from the Ventana Ranch website:

"The VRNA is planning a rally in front of the liquor store site in Ventana Square. Please join us in showing your opposition to this project.

Where: Ventana Square, between KFC/Taco Bell and Little Anitas

When: Wednesday, May 26th, 5pm

We will be inviting the local media, so bring homemade signs, and the kids to show that the Ventana Ranch community is a family friendly community and we don't need a large liquor store."

Let's. Do. It. I'm so there!

Kelly Liquor store: Update

I received this e-mail about the Kelly Liquor store. It doesn't look good...

"Thank you for expressing your concern about the Kelly Liquor Store that will be going up at 6531 Paradise. As I expressed in my previous email, Councilor Lewis asked that I look into this issue on your behalf. I apologize for the length of time this took to research, but I wanted to make sure we provided you with the correct information and that every avenue was properly explored.

On August 19th, 2009 the city received a request for approval to the liquor license application.

As required by city ordinance, the liquor hearing was advertised in the paper on August 24th and August 31st, 2009. Furthermore, the applicant contacted Ventana Ranch Neighborhood Association through a letter, notifying them of the possibility of a liquor store in the vicinity. Through this, the neighborhood was properly notified as required by ordinance.

Zoning checked out the property and completed the zonal certification on September 4th, 2009. They recommended that the license be approved as the zoning (SU-1 for restrictive C2 uses, which was approved by the EPC in 2000) does not provide for any distance requirement from a residential zone. Additionally, the nearest church, at this time, was 3,948 feet away and the nearest school was about 2,000 feet away. The ordinance does not provide for any distance requirement from a park.

The hearing was held on September 10th, 2009. With the findings from zoning and lack of neighborhood complaint, they found that the license would not be detrimental to the public safety and morals of the residents of the City of Albuquerque. They also found that the applicant complied with the ordinance provisions. The liquor license was approved.

Unfortunately, after consulting with the City’s Liquor Hearing Officer and legal advisors, the process is now at a point where we have explored every opportunity to try to stop this. The liquor applicant completely followed state and city requirements.

I can assure you that in the future, now that Councilor Lewis is in the office, he will do his best to make sure residents are aware of any change of this manner in their community. Please know that Councilor Lewis is disappointed that this happened and certainly does not agree with these kinds of establishments in this location."

WANTED: My Match

I came home for the lunch at Dora's on Monday with some unexecpeted friends.

Same socks...just with their idenification.

You see, my little boy has a bad habit of taking off his socks when he takes off his shoes. He said they were his socks, but after doing the laundry, I found out differently. If they belong to you, please let me know and I will bring them over--jennifer[dot]childers[at]gmail[dot]com. Thanks

BOXES!!

We have a LOT of extra boxes from our move and would like to give them away rather than throw them away- does anyone have a need for some good, strong boxes? Let me know!

Hershey Track Meet

Any of you kiddos like track and field?

Last year, a few families along with ours would meet at Volcano Vista High School track weekly as we got ready for the Hershey track meet. We worked on relays (hand-offs), played games, and I timed the kids, and encouraged them to beat their times. They tried all the events, to see what they liked. Anyways, the kids all made it to state!

I thought it'd be fun....to share the fun...and invite all of you...but plan on coming and participating..no just sitting and watching...we need lots of cheering for the kids! :)

This Tues. at 4:30 (May 25th) at the Volcano Vista High School Track we will be meeting & running. (It's a bummer that the local track teams have meets on Sundays.) We will meet the following Tues. at 4:30 and then on June 5th there is a local track meet. This gives the kids a goal to work towards. Larsen's favorite part of the whole thing is if you place first at state, you could qualify for a trip to Hershey Pennsylvania..and an all-expense paid trip for you child. (tourn the Hershey factory, get to go to the Hershey Amusement Park...) Any future track starts out there???

I ran track in high school, and loved it! Matter of fact, I ran in the Hershey Track meet...and now it's tradition all my neices and nephews in Arizona run in it. It's free to participate in the meet, you just have to fill out the reg. form. Your child can participate in 3 out of these 7 events: 100 meter, 50, 200, 400, softball throw, standing long jump, and 4x100 relay...

So bring your kids down to the track...with comfortable clothes and a waterbottle! I think the kids that are 7-12 participate in the meet...but all the young ones have fun practicing..and running too!
The kids will be working on beating their time, not their friend!

Here is the website if you want more info. http://www.hersheystrackandfield.com/

Texas Caviar recipe

Some of you asked for the recipe to the bean dish I had at book club. Very fast, very yummy, very easy. My kind of cooking! Enjoy.

Texas Caviar
1 can each of the following: Garbanzo beans (chick peas), black beans, dark red kidney beans, corn, olives

cilantro, chopped
tomatoes, diced
Green onions, chopped
Green pepper, chopped (optional)
avocados, diced (optional)
Zesty Italian dressing
Salt

Drain and rinse and then combine all canned ingredients in a large bowl. (A word to the wise- if you don’t want to be eating this for days freeze ½ of these for another time- it makes A LOT). Then add in the rest of the ingredients, to taste. Serve with tortilla chips or just eat it plain- it’s that good.

From the kitchen of Connie Peters, Melissa Spencer’s aunt

revised summer lineup for book club

Due to the extreme lack of library availability for The Happiness project we've pushed it back to August. Ladies, make an effort to get this book- it was excellent (according to Melissa) and I envision it being a great discussion book for that meeting. It might be even better if you make 4-5 of your own resolutions now and try to implement them and come that night prepared to share if it helped make your life happier by doing/not doing those things....

Anyhow, here's the lineup for the next meetings. I put in some reviews/teasers of the books below to whet your reading appetite.

June 17- Same kind of different as me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore, 256 pages (9 holds on 3 copies at ABQ library, 2 holds on 1 copy at RR library, )
July 15- North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, 520 pages (1 at RR library, 2 holds on 4 copies available at ABQ library)
August 19- The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, 320 pages (74 holds on first copy returned of 9 copies at ABQ, 3 copies available for RR and it looks like there might be 0 holds on this one.....)

Book teasers

Same kind of different as me
A dangerous, homeless drifter who grew up picking cotton in virtual slavery.
An upscale art dealer accustomed to the world of Armani and Chanel.
A gutsy woman with a stubborn dream.
A story so incredible no novelist would dare dream it.
It begins outside a burning plantation hut in Louisiana . . . and an East Texas honky-tonk . . . and, without a doubt, in the heart of God. It unfolds in a Hollywood hacienda . . . an upscale New York gallery . . . a downtown dumpster . . . a Texas ranch.

North and South
Margaret Hale, a young woman from rural southern England [Austen’s Hampshire to be exact], daughter of a clergyman, proud of her roots and her class, must adjust to the changes in her life when her father resigns from his clerical post and moves the family to the northern industrial town of Milton [Gaskell's fictitonalized Manchester]. Margaret gradually discovers her own strengths in taking on the many domestic duties of her now ill mother and those of their former servants. But Margaret carries with her the prejudices of the gentrified South with her “queenly” snobbish views of the industrial North and the manufacturers and tradesmen who run the mills. She is soon introduced to John Thornton, a self-made “Master” of one of the cotton mills and a local magistrate, well respected by his peers and his employees, yet aware of his shortcomings in the social and intellectual worlds outside of Milton. He comes to Reverend Hale for tutoring and intellectual stimulation – but it is Margaret who soon captures his heart, his passions aroused in spite of himself, all too sure of his own unworthiness in her eyes…Gritty with pain and betrayal and brutality, this true story also shines with an unexpected, life-changing love.

The Happiness Project
What if you could change your life without really changing your life? On the outside, Gretchen Rubin had it all—a good marriage, healthy children and a successful career— but she knew something was missing. Determined to end that nagging feeling, she set out on a year-long quest to learn how to better enjoy the life she already had.
Each month, Gretchen pursued a different set of resolutions—go to sleep earlier, tackle a nagging task, bring people together, take time to be silly—along with dozens of other goals. She read everything from classical philosophy to cutting-edge scientific studies, from Winston Churchill to Oprah, developing her own definition of happiness and a plan for how to achieve it. She kept track of which resolutions worked and which didn’t, sharing her stories and collecting those of others through her blog (created to fulfill one of March’s resolutions). Bit by bit, she began to appreciate and amplify the happiness in her life.
The Happiness Project is the engaging, relatable and inspiring result of the author’s twelve-month adventure in becoming a happier person. Written with a wicked sense of humour and sharp insight, Gretchen Rubin’s story will inspire readers to embrace the pleasure in their lives and remind them how to have fun.

VRES moms

I am sure you VRES moms know about the Tag ice cream party on Monday. I was in the office this morning asking about the times, and the administration asked if I knew anyone who could help out. If you can help serve ice cream they are starting at 1:30 for (I think) grades 3-5 and 2:30 (I believe K-2.)

Clearplay DVD player

So, we have a Clearplay DVD player that we are going to toss unless someone would like it. It's a DVD player that blocks out profanity, violence, vulgarity, and much more. You just have to pay for the "filters." We have the DVD player and the "filter stick" if anyone wants it. You do have to purchase a membership in order to download the filters and I think it's $7.99/month or $79.99/year. We have hundreds already downloaded for free. You can find out more on their website, www.clearplay.com. Let me know if you'd like it!

Savings on piano tunings

Greg Gombert is doing his tuning special again- $50 (including tax) for a standard piano tuning. This is about 40% off regular rates. Book it online at pianocalendar.com or if you have questions call him at 400-3045.
To be fair, my favorite tuner is Jean Luc Matton (259-2368). He is incredibly nit-picky and is ultra-sensitive about fine tuning pianos (that is important to me and I can tell a difference between his piano tuning and someone else's). His standard rate is about $85 but to me he is worth every penny.
Let the music sound in tune......

New Liquor Store in Neighborhood!!!

Now is your chance to get involved!!!! In the shopping center on the corner of Paradise and Universe, there is a sign advertising a new liquor store. As you all know, this store will be built next to middle schools, elementary schools, a high school and a new city park. We need to stop this from happening and it can only be done by our combined voices. This is not the time to stand idly by and "let someone else" speak for you. The safety of our children and neighborhoods depends on us stopping this from happening.

Our city councilman is Dan Lewis. He can be reached at 786-3189 or at danlewis@cabq.gov. You can also reach Michael Wiener at 468-7810 or ddady@bernco.gov. If we flood their offices with calls and emails, I am hopeful we can make something happen. It is also important that we find out which office is responsible for city and county development.

We can do this and it is our time to shine. If anyone will get engaged, I know it will be the sisters in our ward.

Thanks,

Bro Lovin

More F.Y.I.

Did you know that you have to claim head of house on your property tax form or you won't get the discount for living in your home? It does not happen automatically. I just called 222-3700 and they verified that I am not getting the discount. It is about 60-80$ a year. Bummer! I paid 2 years worth for nothing! So to change it take your Notice of Value paper that comes in the mail each year and on the back is a place for a signature for head of family and phone number and date. Just sign and mail it in or fax it to 222-3770. If you don't know where your form is I bet you could call the number and get another. Hopefully we can all save a little money!

FYI

Learned something this past week that maybe most people may not know.  Something they don't tell when you buy a home or when you spend lots of money on that  new dryer.  The air duct that connects to the dryer and runs to the exterior of your home should be cleaned out at least every two years.  If it doesn't, all that lint that leaves your house, collects within the duct and eventually plugs the opening that is located on your roof.  End result...pay lots of money to the repair man to fix the dryer!  So when I had the repair man out fixing my dryer, he told me how to do it myself. (Which saved me at least $120)  So here it is....

You will need to remove the little cap or tent like thing off of your dryer pipe that is located on your roof.
Fill a sock with rocks (enough so that when you put the sock in the pipe, it will rub along the sides) and tie it off  VERY securely with some nylon rope.  You want the rope to be long enough to reach down as far as possible.  Turn your dryer on an AIR DRY cylce (no heat).  While it is running, you will slowly lower the sock up and down the pipe from the rooftop.  (You will definitely want to be wearing something over your eyes, i.e. sunglasses).  Once you feel like there are no more big chunks coming out, put the cover back on and enjoy how much more efficient your dryer will be!!  Made a HUGE difference!!

Decorations??

John Barry, we call him Grandpa John has been in our ward for about 8 months now...and if you haven't gotten to know him, he is a great person, and has become a great friend of our family. A few months ago I went through some of my kitchen decorations and pulled stuff down (the space above the appliances and cupboards where you can decorate stuff) and decorated his kitchen. I was going to head to a thrift store, but thought I'd ask on here first if anyone has anything like greenery, plants, or "fruity/veggie" looking stuff...even New Mexican looking would be fun, so I could finish decorating his space on top of his cupboards, that would be great! Thanks Sisters!

Anyone looking for something fun this summer for your kids to build self-confidence through singing, choreography, showmanship and fun....Andrea Rogers directs Sunshine Generation Children's Performing Group this Summer...see flyer...
$10 off for friends...which is all of you on the ward blog...also family discounts.....
Third....
Ok...so I had this thought..Several weeks ago we rented an Aerator to get our yard ready this spring, and they are like $90...and a few families pitched in and it only cost all of us around $20...we ALL benefited, it was awesome! Thanks to all those that were part of it!
Banzai Falls Original Water Slide - Manley - Toys"R"Us
So, I had this strange thought when I saw this ad in Toys R US for the bouncers for birthday parties; this one was a bouncer water slide. It was on sale for $299...I would never get one...who has an extra $299 lying around to spend on a bouncer??? Taylor's b-day is end of this month; and I've been thinking what we could do for fun. I thought well, maybe others feel the same way, and always try to spend as little as possible; but yet make a great day for their child. Maybe some of you have kids birthdays or birthday parties between the months of May and Septemember....if you know you are going to have a b-day party....and think you might pitch in maybe like $60-$70...you could use it for the day..(they are around $190-$210 to rent from a business for 4 hours) (So, no obligations or committments...I thought I'd just throw it out there as an idea to see if anyone was interested)
If you don't want to do the water, you could just put those plastic balls at the bottom of the slide...I have those plastic balls, if you want to borrow them! :)

Childrens and Infant's Tylenol Recall

For those of you who haven't heard, there has been a recall on Children's and Infant's Tylenol as well as Children's Motrin, Benadryl, and Zyrtec. You can read more about the recall by going here http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/page.jhtml?id=/include/new_recall.inc

There you can check the NDC number on your medicine against the NDC numbers of the recalled products (the NDC numbers are listed near the bottom)

You can also go
http://www.tylenol.com/page2.jhtml?id=tylenol/news/ndc_finder.inc
to put in your NDC number on your bottle and to see exactly what Tylenol products have been recalled. You will find the NDC number on your bottle of Tylenol near the product's name. This is a serious issue and I wanted to make sure that with all the children and infant's in our ward, that everyone is getting Tylenol that is not bad.

*FYI, if yours is part of the recall and you need to get more, mine is Target brand and not part of the recall and I believe the Walgreens brand should be ok too, but double check the NDC number.

Free Mac and Cheese

I don't mean to hog the blog, but I just scored free Mac and Cheese at Albertsons on Coors and Montano. They had the Extreme Cheese Mac and Cheese boxes 2 for $1. Then they had a tear pad by the Mac and Cheese for 55 cents off 2 boxes. Since they are doing double coupons this week it doubled to $1- that's the max, and I got both for free. There were plenty of coupons hanging there tonight. (I might have gone back for 10 boxes with 5 coupons and had a total due of nothing!!!!!!)

Macy's dresses for girls

Macy's is having an awesome clearance on their little girl dresses. They have so many cute ones from about size 2-14. The prices on the tags are often much lower if you check them at the price scanner. Plus they are having their friends and family extra 25% off till Monday- you need the coupon. I have the email- call or email me if you want it. The dress shown was $70 and with the 25% off was about $21. There were several others for $15. Happy Shopping! Susan T. jsturner1@q.com
