Transportation Bedding Sets (X2)

Hello,

I am planning on changing my boy's room around. Currently, they have a transportation themed room with matching quilts (they are in twin bunk beds), sheets, wall hangings, carpet, valence, etc. I would like to sell the whole lot. So, if your little ones are into cars, planes and trains, let me know. I will try to get pictures posted tomorrow. The bedding is gently used, and still has plenty of life. Oh, and the quilts are machine washable in a normal size machine :)

Nutella Brownies

Some people have asked for this recipe, so I thought I'd post it here.

About 1/2 cup butter
2 oz unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup Nutella

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously butter 8 muffin cups in muffin tin. Microwave 1/2 cup butter to melt. Add chocolate, stirring until melted, then add sugar and cocoa. Whisk in egg, vanilla, and salt. Add flour and stir until smooth. Spoon batter evenly into muffin cups. Using a small spoon, make a depression in each portion of batter and spoon 1 tbsp Nutella into each. Bake until a toothpick inserted into brownie part comes out with just a few moist crumbs (I've found this takes about 18 minutes in my oven). Let cool for 10 minutes then remove brownies from muffin tin.

Change in Dates for Gouache Classes

APS's spring break is during the middle of March. Therefore, I am changing the days that the gouache classes will be held. The new dates are Thursday, March 3rd, 10th, 24th and 31st from 4 - 5:30pm.

Someone asked if they needed to already possess some art skills to join. The answer is, absolutely not! Whether my students are 5 or 100 years old, I will give them drawing tips while they work with the gouache - without squashing their gouaching groove!

So share the news and bring a friend!

Thanks,
Rachael B.

Gouache with us!

I am gearing up to teach a series of art classes focusing on ONE medium at a time. Each session will include four classes over the course of 2-4 weeks. These classes will be open to any child, teen or adult who has a little 'art in their heart'.

The first session will be March 8th, 15th, 22th and 29th from 4-5:30pm. The cost is $30 per person. There is no limit on the class size and no minimum age...although, you need to be interested in the classes and old enough to constructively participate. All materials, except a cover-up, will be provided.

The first in my series of art classes will be gouache (rhymes with squash). Gouache is a painting technique and it also refers to the type of paint. Gouache is opaque watercolors mixed with gum (but not like the Bubblicious type). "Typical" watercolors are transparent and are mild colors. Gouache still uses water to thin it out, but it acts more like acrylic paint on how it covers. Yet, it has the smooth flow as watercolors and can be very bright. Confused yet?

Gouache is very popular among illustrators. Some gouache work is typically mistaken to be done on a computer because it can be so smooth and even textured. During our four classes I will teach you how to gouache on illustrator board or hot pressed paper. By the fourth class, hopefully you will have had enough practice to feel comfortable with gouache. The goal will be to create a piece or two that you are very proud of.

A fun example of gouache is from the author and illustrator, Chris Van Dusen's work. He uses gouache in almost all of his work. Check it out:

Let me know if you are interested. My number is in the ward list or you can email me at rachaelboyle(at)gmail(dot)com

Thanks,
Rachael

Just FYI they lowered the speed on Rainbow between Paseo and Woodmont (where the church is) to 30 mph. It was 40 last week. Thought I'd warn everyone since I see police sitting in the parking lot of the Trails park pretty often waiting for speeders. Even on Sunday Mornings around 9..........

Ok ladies, I just had to share this. I am a big menu planner, and I am constantly tweaking the way I do it to make it more efficient. I know there are a few of you out there that plan as well, so I couldn't resist sharing this link. If anyone is interested in trying to make one, let me know. Might be more fun to have company! I went to Barnes and Noble today and found a hardbound copy of How to Win Friends & Influence people for 9.98 which also includes How to Stop Worrying & Start Living. Cheaper than the paperback version of the single book. It is on the left as you walk in the first set of doors. There were three more copies when I left.

April 21st, 7:30 NEED HOST AND DISCUSSION LEADER for The Hobbit by J.R. Tolkien (precursor to The Lord of the Rings series)

Wikipedia's info on "A Midwife's Tale"

For many years historians ignored Martha Ballard's diary, dismissed as repetitive and ordinary. After eight years of research, historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich produced A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard based on her diary, 1785–1812:
"When I finally was able to connect Martha's work to her world, I could begin to create stories."
Ulrich's history is an intimate and densely imagined portrait of the industrious and reticent Martha Ballard, and provides a vivid examination of ordinary life in the early American republic, including the role of women in the household and local market economy, and the nature of marriage and sexual relations. Each chapter in A Midwife's Tale represents one aspect of the life of a woman in the late 18th Century. The overriding theme is the nature of women's work at that time, in the context and community. Supporting documents construct Ulrich's interpretation of terse and circumspect diary entries, dealing with medical practice and the prevalence of violence and crime.

In 1991, "A Midwife's Tale" received the Pulitzer Prize, the Bancroft Prize, the John S. Dunning Prize, the Joan Kelly Memorial Prize in Women's History, the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians Book Prize, the Society for Historians of the Early Republic Book Prize, the William Henry Welch Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine, and the New England Historical Association Award. Later, the PBS series "The American Experience" developed "A Midwife's Tale" into a documentary film, for which Ulrich served as a consultant, script collaborator, and narrator

Free Garage Door Opener

It may not be likely that you need a garage door opener, but I thought I'd give it a try. We replaced a chain driven garage door opener with a belt driven one and we want to give away the old one. It is three years old and comes with two remotes. Unfortunatley the button that you place inside the garage near your entry exit door just went out, but I was told you can easily but a new one. If interested call Erin S. on the ward directory.

book available

February's book for the book club is entitled "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. I LOVE this book. It has forever changed how I interact with my husband and children. I am a different parent because of this book. It is very easy to read and a great book to think about while you're doing the dishes. I have an extra copy available to loan if you want to read it.

Don't forget about January's book, "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie. We'll meet on January 20th at Monique F's house at 7:30.

Healthy snack recipe

My husband and I have been doing P90x for the past 2 months and their nutrition plan suggests a protein bar every day. They can run $1 each if you buy them in bulk. Ouch! However, I have modified a recipe I found online to give close to the same nutrition as store-bought bars for far cheaper. When you buy the almonds, protein, raisins and oats in bulk from Sam's these bars will only cost $0.40 each. Cheaper and healthier than a candy bar! These are tasty- my kids will take them in their lunches. I feel good about giving them these because I figure they are packed with good stuff that I couldn't normally get them to eat. So, if you or any of your family are interested I am posting my recipe below. Happy healthy eating!

p90x imitation Protein Bars

4 cups oats (the slow cook kind, not instant)
6 scoops chocolate whey protein
3 heaping Tablespoons UNSWEETENED baking cocoa
1/3 cup sugar-free maple syrup
3/4 cup no-sugar added applesauce
3 tsp cinnamon
2 cups chopped/slivered almonds, toasted in a skillet until light brown
1 cup low-fat peanut butter
2 T vanilla extract
1 cup raisins or craisins
water, added 1 T at a time

Mix your wet ingredients together in one bowl and do the same for the dry. Then slowly combine the two and mix well (I use my dough hooks on my beaters because it's VERY THICK.) Add water 1 T at a time until it's not dry and crumbly. Watch out for adding too much water because you'll be sticky city. Dump onto a cookie sheet and press flat with wet hands. Cut into rectangles with pizza cutter. Makes 18 bars. I like to make a double batch, freeze them in baggies and then pull them out as I go. Delish!
Nutritional information (COMPARE mine / p90x protein bar)

Spanish speakers needed!

Does your husband speak Spanish?
My husband, Clint, is going to be taking a Spanish test in the near future. It is super important that he does very well so that he can move around in his career. He served a mission in Argentina but is rusty on his Spanish now. He is considering organizing a "Spanish speaking man night" to play games, tell hunting stories, eat yummy snacks, talk sports, be disgusting and whatever else men do so that he can practice his Spanish and have fun. Maybe this could be held 2-3 times per month at different homes for now and anyone who wants to show up can. Perhaps if a "man night" is successful it could be once a month later on. Would your husband be interested? Please let me know and I'll set up a time --- that I can make sure to be out of the house :). Otherwise, do you have any other suggestions on how he could dive in and practice?
Thanks,
Rachael B

Free stuff

Temple anyone??

Brad and I like to go to the temple every month, but last month with all the craziness...we missed, but we went this past weekend.  I forgot how much I enjoy the temple and feel spiritually rejuvenated!   So, I wanted to invite all of you to go to the temple who haven't gone in a while and need a free babysitter, or go regularly and want to go again.  I had this idea the other day, and thought I better follow the spirit! :) Brad is great with it too! So, call me or e-mail me to arrange having your kids over to play so you can go enjoy the temple.  (We're in between soccer seasons...so this Saturday we are completely open.)

So, this next upcoming Saturday, January 15th starting at 8:00 a.m.....ending at 8:00 p.m. We can have a few families' kids over at a time at different times, but you'll need to call and set it up with me so we don't have too many families at once.  The only thing I ask is that you bring snacks for your kids and food already prepared (if you are going during a meal time) (since we'll be busy playing with the kids, we won't have time to prepare food)
Our number is on the ward list, or you can e-mail me.

(**This is a addition by Stef Burns. If you do go to the temple and don't have your own names to do, Brian and I have family names there that we would love for you all to do. Just ask at the desk for B.C. Burns family file. Thanks!!)

Zumba Tomorrow

Thanks to Juliana Smith and her husband for volunteering Priesthood for tomorrow.

We will have zumba at 8:45 at the chapel.

Thanks!

Smith's Case Lot Sale

Just wanted to let you guys know that Smith's is having their case lot sale right now.  (It usually lasts two weeks, so don't worry about trying to get there before Wed.)  I use this sale to stock up on my food storage because even though it's called a "case" lot sale, you don't have to buy by the case.  Even if you don't want to buy for food storage, they still have some pretty good deals. :)

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before cutting.
