sitter needed

Autumn Begay is trying to find a sitter for her 3 kids on October 5th from 2pm-5pm in their home (because she can have someone pick their oldest kid up from school but she'll have to drop him off at home around 4ish). They normally pay 10.00/hr. If interested contact Autumn in the ward list.

Laminator

So to add to Rachael's post below...Costco sells a small home laminator for $20 and it comes with 100 sheets
(8 1/2 x 11, 4 x 6, and 5 x 7).  You can also buy the refill sheets at Hobby Lobby and if you use their 40% off coupon it makes them really inexpensive.  I would be happy to take anyone or pick one up for someone if you don't have a membership.   They are located on the business / school supply isle, right past the electronics department.  Happy Laminating!!

General Conference Idea and others...

I thought I would post this to give some ideas for reverent Conference, Sacrament meeting, and Sunday activities at home. Some of you might want to scrounge up a pile of your old Friend magazines and pull this together for General Conference.

I have found that The Friend usually has two activity pages in each issue. (This does not include the coloring page in each one.) I have been tearing them out and laminating them for my children when we are done reading them. Put the backs together so that you only need one laminating sheet per two activity pages. (There are inexpensive laminators at Wal - Mart that do the job just great!) Use thin, washable dry erase markers for them so they can be used over and over again. However, sometimes the dry erase markers stain if left on too long. So just have your kids wipe them as they go. Then you shouldn't have any problems. Hole punch it and throw in into a "Reverent Activities" notebook.

After you start collecting them, they'll add up quickly and you'll fill your notebook.

... I also like to cut the last page out of the Friend (and Ensign and New Era...) when we are done reading it, back it with pretty card stock, and laminate it. I love all of the children's gospel artwork. Then have a designated spot where it can be displayed until you replace it with the next month's picture. I sit mine on a side table held up by a pretty "plate" stand. Then store the old one and use it for lessons and activities for later.

Just some ideas.

Feed the Sister Missionaries

The dinner calendar for the sister missionaries is wide open. We can't pass it around on Sunday due to Conference. **If you are available to feed our sweet Sisters please email me at www(dot)taystephhot(at)msn(dot)com or call me, Stephanie H on the ward list. They have Friday October 1st open, so we'd like to fill that one right away. Thank you! You're family will be blessed!

Hot Air Balloon Launch

Do you want to watch a real hot air balloon launch without going to Balloon Fiesta? At Tierra Antigua on Friday morning one of our teachers launches her balloon from the school. I think it's about 7:30 am! But our PTA is going to be there handing out samples of Butterbraids, if that tempts you. I will try to get the exact times soon. If you attend Tierra Antigua, you should be getting a flier in your child's backpack soon. Thanks! Susan T.

Repost: Halloween Party....

I posted this last week and just wanted to get one more chance out there so that we can get things rolling. I am a procrastinator by nature so the earlier the better for me!

Let me know if you are interested: stef.burns -at- gmail.com!

Okay, Sisters. Mark your calendars. We are going to have our annual Halloween carnival/party on Oct. 30 from 5-7pm.
Here's how it works.

It's gonna be potluck this year. Bring something to share for dinner.

Also it is potluck carnival too. Every family that comes plans a "booth" for the kids to visit. It can be anything from a cakes walk to bobbing for apples. Anything goes.

What I need you to do is to email me (stef.burns gmail.com) and let me know you are interested. Then once we get all the emails, I will send out another email to all for you all to respond to letting us know what you are planning on doing for the carnival so we don't have too many duplicates.

Sound like fun??

We thought this worked out great because Halloween is on a Sunday and the Trunk-or-Treat is on the 22nd. Perfect!

Let me know! stef.burns gmail.com)

It was Amazing!!

Primary Leaders and all others involved!

Let me just say that you did a wonderful, marvelous, amazing job on Sunday!! The Spirit was so strong from the begining to the end. I cried from the very first song.

You all worked so hard and I was simply amazed that you were able to include every child, making them feel important and part of something totally amazing.

I can't believe that anyone present in that room on Sunday didn't feel the Spirit. Even our interpreters were crying.

Thank you, thank you so much for all the time and worry and sweat that you put into it!

I love you all so much for the influence you have on my children. All of you!

If you would like to join me in telling these wonderful Primary leaders and music leaders thank you, leave 'em a comment!!

Play Date Anyone?

Unfortunately, I cannot go to the park play dates because my 18 mo. old is a little too dare devilish, (and since I don't want to follow him all around the playground and have no social time) I've decided to host a play date at my house. I know it's kind of late, but I thought I'd ask just in case anyone would be able to make it.

So, feel free to come over tomorrow anywhere from 10-12. I will have pumpkin chocolate chip cookies!!

Side note: although I have 3 boys, I do have girl toys ;)

Changing out clothes

Does anyone else dread the thought of having to change out summer to winter clothes for your kids? It seems like it takes me an entire day to swap out shorts for sweaters. What is your method of storing/swapping clothes for the seasons? Post your own post so it's easier to see the responses.

We meet the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM (location varies) and chat about the book/related topics until it's so late the hubbies call wondering where we are. (No joke.) We rotate between 6 different genres. The next 3 meetings will discuss the following:

November 18th: (Book made into movie) Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
December 16th: (Academic/non-fiction/biography) The Life of Our Lord by Charles Dickens

Get on the library website, go down to your favorite store, snag it for cheaper online, just get the book so you can voice your opinion. Happy reading.

Zumba Exercise Alternative

O. K. Ladies. I have heard some of you ask about the Stake exercise class. If you are bummed there is no Zumba tomorrow may be a good time to try going to the Stake Center from 9:30 to 10:30. It is a toning class taught by a certified instructor. Her movements are simple repetitons with light weights and sometimes bands, and a little cardio. There is some floor work so bring a mat or a towel. The kids can run around one side of the gym. If you don't have light weights or a band I have some extras and so does the instructor. I have gone to it for a long time so if you have any questions contact me, Erin S. My number is in the ward directory.

crash pad

A family friend of mine is a 3rd year med student who will be coming to Albuquerque for a rotation in October.  He is LDS, married with a family, but he will be alone during his time in ABQ.  He is looking for a crash pad for that month for maybe $100 - $200 per week.  He will eat all his meals at the hospital, will have his own car, just needs a place to sleep and maybe spend some weekend time. If you have a spare room and this is interesting to you, or if you know someone who might be interested, let me know.

OUR CHILDREN'S SAFETY

**This is a must read!!! Please watch over your children and take proper measures to ensure their safety. I was terrified to hear of this happening in Ventana Ranch!
I received this from a woman named Brandie Marr. She is the Property Manager at Canyon Gate Real Estate, the company that manages Ventana Ranch.

The Ventana Ranch HOA was recently made aware of a student safety incident which occurred within the Ventana Ranch area regarding the attempted abduction of a Volcan Vista H.S. student. Volcano Vista's Principal sent out the following message to parents:

September 16, 2010

Dear Parents,

This letter is to inform you of an incident that happened yesterday, September 15, at 5:00 pm in the Ventana Ranch area.

We were informed this afternoon that at 5:00 pm yesterday there was an incident where a student walking in the Ventana Ranch area was grabbed by a man walking along the street. The man was described as a Hispanic male in his twenties. He has a medium build with dark, bushy eyebrows and medium complexion. He appeared to be jogging in a grey muscle t-shirt and dark blue sweat pants.
Fortunately, our student, a junior, was able to get away and was not seriously injured.

We take these sorts of incidents very seriously and will remind students of safety measures they can take. We will also be especially vigilant in the coming days to monitor people coming on or near the campus. APS Police will have extra surveillance in the area.

If you or your student hears of any incident of this type, we ask that you notify our security department or our APD Resource Officers, 890-0343, ext. 37192.

We also ask for your help. Please talk to your student about walking alone. Remind them that running away is a good plan. Screaming and calling for help also can draw attention and help the student get away.

I would also like to take the opportunity to remind you that your student needs to leave campus by 2:45 pm unless he/she is a member of an afterschool program with adult supervision which includes sports, tutoring, afterschool classes, etc. There is NO supervision for students who are waiting for rides after this time period and they may not loiter inside the building.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your student's assistant principal or me.

Thank you,
Yvonne Garcia

The security team for Ventana Ranch, Summit Security, has been made aware of the situation. If you have concerns about suspicious activity, please contact them at 505-255-6063 or contact the Albuquerque Police Department at 242-COPS. If you see an emergency situation in progress, call 911.

White Bread Recipe

For those of you who've tasted my bread, and want more...here's the recipe. :-) Courtesy of Fleischmann's.
2 cups milk
3/4 cups sugar
8 tsp salt
3/4 cups margarine(I use real butter)
6 cups warm water( 105-115 deg. F)
4 pkgs yeast (or 9 tsp)
24 cups unstifted flour

I usually make 1/2 batches, so it fits in my 6qt mixer better. Scald milk: stir in sugar, salt and margarine. Stir yeast in large bowl, (or mixer)with your warm water). Add lukewarm milk mixture and 1/2 the flour: beat until smooth. Add enough additional flour to make a stiff dough. Turn out onto lightly floured board: knead until smooth and elastic, about 10-12 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover, let rise in warm place, free from draft, until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Punch dough down. Cover: let rest 15 minutes. Divide dough into 6 equal pieces.(or 8 depending on your loaf pan size). Roll each piece into a 14x9 rectangle. Shape into loaves. Place in 9x5x3 inch loaf pans. Cover, let as many as will fit in the oven rise in warm place, free from draft, until double in bulk, about 1 hour( about 50 minutes usually in ABQ) Cover remaining loavex and put in cooler place, free from draft until double in bulk. Bake at 400 degrees F about 30 minutes(20 in my oven) or until done. Cool on wire racks.

Enjoy. Can use up to 1/2 whole wheat flour and still tasty, just cut down on the flour, and keep a moister but not too sticky dough when kneading.

Apple Pickin

If you love this kind of activity, or for those who are new to the area, it is that time of year again when Dixon Apple Farm opens for pickin. They have the rare Champagne apple that so many love. You can get all of the information on their website at www[dot]dixonapples[dot]com. They open on the 23rd...of this month... get there early.

3 and 4 Year Old Preschool

If anyone is interested in sending their child to preschool, please feel free to contact me. I just moved here from Las Vegas where I taught preschool after "retiring" from the district there. I teach a 3 year old class and a 4 year old class. It is academic, where I teach from the kindergarten curriculum, ie: letters, numbers, and how to read (in the 4 year old class). If anyone is interested in doing this I would love to start up my preschool here as well. You can contact me through this blog, or through my email: debrarivard[at] hotmail[dot]com. Or feel free to call me at 702.292.3084. I'm also on Facebook if that's easiest for you. Thanks so much!!

Note from the Bishop

Well, we are about 50 days from the election and 23 days from absentee voting.  The campaign is going great and we are receiving positive reports and support.  If anyone is willing to put a sign in their yard, I would greatly appreciate it.  Please phone or contact me atnedfullerforjudge@gmail.com.  Moreover, if you have a friend or neighbor that would be willing to put a sign in let us know.  It is a statewide race and evey little bit helps.  Finally, if anyone needs to register to vote remember the deadline is October 5, 2010.

I appreciate everyone's help and look forward to victory November 2, 2010.

Book Club

It's time for the last outdoor book club meeting of the year. Bring your sweaters and blankets this Thursday at 7:30 PM to the Spencer's backyard. We're discussing "A Woman of Independent Means" by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey. Didn't read it? Come anyway to get in on the discussion on women's rights, family relationships and money. Snacks are always welcome (as well as people- this is not an "official" club and you don't have to "join" to come). See you then.

Free Washer/dryer

My brother and his new wife have an extra washer and dryer that they are giving away for free. They both work well, but the dryer is a gas dryer and they only had an electric hook up. You must be able to retrieve it yourself since they don't have a truck. They live near Unser and McMahon. Contact Melissa S. in the ward directory or email me at melissa dot lee dot spencer at gmail dot com for a direct phone number to him.

The Force is Strong at Target

If any of you have little ones as crazy about Star Wars as I am, you will be happy to know that the Dollar Spot at Target is full of nifty Star Wars items, like dry erase boards, light up yo-yos, tin buckets, pens, stickers, magnets and even a C-3PO Stress ball. Who could live without that?? Certainly not me!

Awesome deal on Signing Time Season 2

There is an awesome deal on the Signing Time Season 2 dvds online at Best Buy. They have the box set of 1-3 for $14.99 and the box set of 4-7 for $14.99.

If you haven't tried any of the Signing Time dvds, they are wonderful. They work very well at helping younger kids who aren't talking yet learn to communicate without words. They are also great for teaching adults ;) If you are interested in the dvds but don't want to buy them without trying them out, let me know. I have this set and you are welcome to borrow a dvd or two. They are a little different from the series one set but they are still great. My kids love them.

If you want to borrow one, email me at karasamjack [@] gmail dot com

Thanks

Thanks for changing the color of the lettering, Kristie. I much prefer the blue/green color to the pink. I'm just saying....

random school question

Hey Tierra Antigua moms... can anyone tell me about curriculum night at the school next week?  I just see it on the calendar, but haven't heard any details about it.  I'm going to be out of town and my dear husband will be home with kids.  I'm trying to arrange schedules and such for him in advance.  I actually tried to call the school and honest-to-goodness the secretary couldn't/wouldn't answer my question, so she transferred me to the teacher who is a sub who couldn't answer me either.  Is the curriculum night for parents AND students?  Are siblings welcome?  Do I need to arrange for someone to watch one or both of my girls while David goes?  Thanks :-)

Heart and Sole Dance Class

Last year, Halayna took the Heart and Sole Dance Class from Cassie Escher, a wonderfully talented young woman in the Taylor Ranch Ward. She was amazing (so amazing in fact, that Halayna has named her dolls all Cassie and has informed me that she will be naming her baby girl Cassie, as well.)

She has sent out an e-mail, wondering if there was enough interest for her to do another class. She is incredibly affordable, and does a great job with the girls. Please e-mail her if you are interested.
