Bicyles

Before I go out and buy bicycles, I thought I would ask if anyone had extras that they would like to get rid of. I am looking for a 20 inch boy bicycle and a 16-18 inch girl (or boy) bicycle. I would rather pay someone I know, than Walmart. There was no such thing as exercise in Georgia, and therefore, bicycles were not necessary.

Fall Samplers 50% Off

High Country Gardens' Fall Samplers are on sale for half off through next week. This makes their prices quite good, and all plants that they sell are suited for this area. They're based out of Santa Fe, and I've had wonderful success with all of their plants. We're getting the grape sampler, which is 5 cold-hardy varieties of grapes in gallon pots for $32.47. This comes out to less than $7 a pot. Grapes at Lowes (which only sells one variety) are $10. If I didn't already have raspberry bushes we'd be trying out the berry sampler as well!

Book Club Location Change

Since the weather is rainy and cold I don't think it would be very fun to meet outside tonight for Book Club. Michelle E. has graciously offered to let us crash at her house to discuss "Guns, Germs and Steel". She lives in Ventana West and is in the ward directory. Spread the word about the change. See you there!

Harry Potter Anyone?????

I am planning a movie night out tomorrow night. Anyone wanting to see the new Harry Potter is welcome to join. It is playing at the Cottonwood mall at 6:30 Tuesday the 15th. I know that is a bit early, but it is a fairly long movie, so the later time won't work for me. Hope to see you there! Susan

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Opened July 15, 2009 | Runtime:2 hr. 33 min.
PGscary images, some violence, language and mild sensualityVoldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane's chocolates! And then there's Hermione, simmering with jealously but determined not to show her feelings.

Drop and Swap

In case you haven't heard, our drop and swap will be on September 26th. The time is still undecided, but start gathering together your unwanted clothes, toys, houseware, books, etc and get ready to trade! If you have big items that you want to get rid of, bring a picture of it (or a paper with the description) with your phone number and you can post it on the bulletin board. Feel free to invite friends and neighbors to participate-- and let's make sure we are extra-friendly to those there that we don't know! I'll post the time once it is decided.

The Motherload Sale: Children’s Consignment Event

I like the site www.abqonthecheap.com because it give out all kinds of inexpensive things to do around Albuquerque. Here is something I found on their website concerning this Saturday. Happy shopping!

The Motherload Sale: Children’s Consignment Event

It’s that time again. The time when squeals and shrieks of delight fill the air. No, we’re not talking about the State Fair. We mean it’s time to score cheap, gently used children’s clothes at the fall edition of The Motherload Sale.

On Saturday, September 12 (2009), from 8:00am to 2:00pm, you can shop for kids’ clothing, toys, strollers, and other merchandise for children. All used, but all in good condition. And all cheap!

The Motherload Sale accepts only cash or check up to $100 with a valid NM ID. Bring your own shopping bags or purchase ginormous bags at the event for $2. For this shopping excursion, it’s best to leave the kids (and all their paraphernalia) at home, because any stroller, diaper bag, etc., you want to bring in the door must be tagged before you can enter — and no toys at all are allowed in. So, skip the hassle and leave the kids with Dad or Grandma for the morning!

The Motherload Sale is held at Montgomery Church of Christ, 7201 Montgomery NE, Albuquerque.

–Elizabeth Hanes

Case Lot Sale

Smith's is having their case lot sale right now. That means that you can buy canned goods and some other stuff by the case like you would at Costco, and it is really cheap too! So now is a good time to buy all things canned- canned tomatoes, cream of chicken soup, fruit, veggies (although I think the Kroger brand goes to .33 at Thanksgiving), tuna, and more. I found this list from Prepared LDS Family to be very helpful. Happy shopping!

Book Club reminders

Pull out your reading lamps! Don't forget about these books. Everyone is invited and you don't have to have finished the book to come and discuss those topics.

The next book club meeting is on September 17th at my house. We're doing "Guns Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond and Chelsie Larson is leading the discussion.

On October 15th we'll discuss "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" at Dora Thomas's house. Dora will lead the discussion. FYI I have a copy of this book available to borrow if you want to read it. It's also for sale at Costco for less than $10 (I think?)

On November 19th we'll discuss "Gone With The Wind" by Margaret Mitchell. It'll be at Chelsey Jorgensen's house and she'll lead the discussion.

Hope to see you there.

Good deal on wheat grinders

If you are in the market for a wheat grinder, there is a really good deal right now. The Wondermill (I have heard it is awesome) is only $219 right now through simplylivingsmart, plus free shipping! These are normally about $259, so that is a pretty good deal! The hand-operated wondermill is also part of the deal for $179. (I have heard these are great too) There is a $30 manufacturer rebate + the website will credit your credit card $10 if you buy by Tuesday Sept. 8th. (They will credit you on the 9th) Otherwise, the M.R. and the free shipping are until Nov. 25th! This is the best deal I have personally seen on these, so this may be a good time to buy one!

Carpool

Would anyone be interested in carpooling to Scouts this fall with me? My wonderful hubby works on Wednesday night and I am hoping that someone would be willing to do the pick-up part. That allows me to get the others into bed! Please let me know by e-mailing me elpinons@yahoo.com or you can call me (look me up under "p"). I have room for two more in my car and I live near Las Ventanas and Rainbow. Thank you so much!!!

Craft night

Correction: Craft night is Tues Sept 15th, not Sept 13th (which is a Sunday). Sorry for the mistake.

Yummmm

Here are a couple of recipes that have been asked for a lot by women in our ward! Enjoy!

Cheese Soup

From the kitchen of Cristi Bikhazi.

1/2 cup carrots, finely diced

1/2 cup celery, finely diced

1/2 onion (green or normal), finely diced

1/2 tablespoon butter

1/4 cup flour (or more)

2 cups milk

1 1/2 cup chicken broth

1 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or more)

Melt butter in large pot. Saute the carrots, celery, onion together until tender. Add flour and mix well. Blend (I put it all in a food processor to get it smooth). Add milk and chicken broth. Just before ready to serve, add 1 1/2 cup (or more) shredded cheddar cheese. Do not cool too much after cheese is added. Garnish with a dollop of sour cream and/or a dash of paprika.

Crepes

From the kitchen of Honey Gee.

2 Tbs melted butter, cooled

3 eggs

1 cup milk

3/4 cup flour

1/4 tsp salt

1 Tbs sugar (or more)

sliced strawberries

special filling

Melt butter and cool. Beat eggs and milk together. Add flour, salt and sugar. Beat until smooth. Add cooled butter; beat until incorporated (about 10 seconds). Regridgerate batter 1 hour or overnight (optional). Refridgeration gets the air bubbles out. (Personal note: It helps to blend or food process the batter to get the flour lumps out. Then refridgerate).

Preheat frying pan over medium heat (for a large pan; or low heat for a small pan). Pour about 4 tablespoons of batter into hot pan. (Use however much you need to cover the bottom of the pan while still keeping the crepes very thin.) Rotate pan to cover whole bottom of pan. Leave until very slightly brown and cooked. Flip and cook other side until done. Lay flat.

Cover with platic wrap. Can refridgerate for 2 days. These also freeze well; be sure to wrap several times to keep from getting freezer burnt.

To fill: Lay flat. Spread filling on one side (1/2 of crepe). Place sliced strawberries on top of filling. Fold crepe in 1/2 and then in 1/2 again (triangle). Serve.

Crepe Filling

From the kitchen of Honey Gee

8 oz. cream cheese

1 1/4 cup powdered sugar

1 Tbs lemon juice (1 tsp to 1 Tbs)

1/2 tsp vanilla

1 cup whipped cream

Mix cream cheese, powedered sugar, lemon juice and vanilla. Mix well. Fold in whipped cream.

Will fill at least two batches of crepes, up to 4 batches of crepes (depending on how much you like to put in each crepe).

Calling all crafters

...and even those who feel they do not have a crafty bone in their bodies. Chelsey L. and I (Jenny C.) are starting a Craft group. The first meeting will be on Tues, Sept 15th at 7:30pm at my house (address is on ward lists) and we will be doing applique. We will provide the fabric, patterns and iron-on...all you need to bring is a onsie or t-shirt (FYI: The patterns are geared toward kids). We will also be picking which crafts we will be doing for the next couple of months so come with ideas that we can all do (please keep to about $10). RSVP to either of us by Friday Sept 11th so we know how much supplies to get. Thanks and happy crafting to all.

Movie Night TOMORROW!!

Alright, ladies! Movie night is TOMORROW NIGHT, Thursday, September 3. We're watching Catch Me If You Can as a follow-up to our book club, but we want everyone to come, even if you didn't read the book.

We'll start at 7:30ish (but come whenever you can) and we'll be having delicious munchies and good times with our girlfriends! It will be held at Chelsey J's house (look me up if you need directions).

I've got the ClearPlay DVD player and a filter for the movie, so any questionable parts will be edited out. Gotta love technology, right?

So bring a yummy snack if you'd like and perhaps a pillow to sit on, and join us for a fun night out!

Car cake pan?

Does anyone happen to have a car-shaped cake pan that I could borrow? I have a request for a hotwheels birthday cake from my son, and it sure would be a lot easier with the right pan!
