Learn to sign in 4 days!

Kobe has been wanting to teach an ASL class for a while. He is fluent in ASL and so we decided, why not. (I, his mom, will be helping out.)

Here is the plan:
We will meet Mondays and Wednesdays for the first two weeks in July. (July 5, 7, 12, 14)
It will be at our house. (Call me and I can give you our address) from 1-2pm.
The cost is $25/child attending.
This class is for kids ages 5-10.

They will learn 100+ signs and we will be using games, music, books and fun to help learn, practice and reinforce the signs.

Let us know if this is something you want to do. And we will see you there...here...you know what I mean!!

Eclipse This Week

It's that time again! For those of you who have been living under a rock, the third movie in the Twilight series, Eclipse, comes out this weekend. I'd like to get together a group to go and see it. Since it opens on Wednesday, let's go on Thursday so we can beat the weekend rush. We'll be going to the 8:00 showing (if we can still get tickets), and if 8:00 is sold out, let's try for the 9:25 (late, I know, but beggars can't be choosers). For those of you that want a true girls' night out, we'll be having dinner at Pei Wei at 6, which will leave us enough time to go and find seats together. Please let me know ASAP if you'd like to come to the movie and if you're going to dinner as well. I'm buying tickets for anyone who asks me to tomorrow night. It will be $7.75 a ticket since I'll be picking up the passes at Costco. Please let me know by 7:00 tomorrow night if you want me to buy tickets for you. We had such a great time last time; I can't wait to do it again! All are welcome!!

Alameda Spray Park

Have you been to the Alameda Spray Park yet? We went last week and had a blast. It’s located on 9800 4th street (just 2 blocks north of Alameda- take Paseo East to 2nd street, go north on 2nd street until you hit Alameda, turn West on Alameda, then directly go North on 4th street. It took me less than 15 minutes to get there from up here in Ventana.)

It’s got all sorts of fountains and things that spray you with water. Even my two-year-old was gung-ho about the “cool outdoor shower”. It was great because I went with a friend and sat under the huge shade umbrella (provided) on a lawn chair (also provided) and had a nice long visit while I kept an eye on my kids. It was far easier than taking them swimming and they still enjoyed it just as much. I enjoyed it even more!

Open Monday-Friday 10-7 PM (community center kids are there from 12-2)
Saturday-Sunday 10-6 PM

Cost: $1.75 adults (if you’re going to get wet),
$1.25 kids ages 6-17,
$1 for kids 0-2 and spectators.

free stuff

We are giving away the following things:

*a 27" tv (CRT style)
*a TV wall mount to hang a tv up out of the way
*a 3 drawer filing cabinet
*a shoe rack
*a curved curtain rod (you'll need to find some hardware to mount it on the wall)
*a child booster seat for the car
*an electric powered 4-wheeler for little kids (it works)

2 Pirate letter banner
3 swirl pirate decorations
pirate flag banner
pirate festive iron-ons
couple of pirate center pieces
25 gift cello bags..

All you need for a pirate party! (except paper goods) :)
Just come and pick it up!

ALSO

Jody Bailey just moved from our ward, and is looking to see if anyone wants to clean her house...she could hire someone professionally, but thought someone from the ward might want to do it...and make some extra cash. She'll pay someone a couple hundred dollars (she is not allowed to clean it...part of her contract) to do it! (And she really wants her deposit back) Anyone want to earn some extra money???...Or even if there are a couple of people that want to...you can get it done faster!

Southwest Airfare Birthday Sale

I just wanted to let people know that Southwest Airlines is having a sale on fare. 0-400 miles is $39 each way.  It is ONLY for 72 hrs!

Go to SOUTHWEST and check it out.

Hope this helps someone out, I know I am always watching for good fare.

Cystic Fibrosis Run

I know there are a lot of us out there that enjoy running, walking, and all that fun stuff. Here is a race coming up to benefit the research, to find a cure, for cystic fibrosis. There is a family in our ward that have two children with Cystic Fibrosis so it would be neat to go out there and help support the cause. This should be fun for everyone! Hope to see you there. :)

I'm looking for a preschool for my 4 year-old son for the upcoming fall. Does anyone have any recommendations or know anyone who teaches out of their home? I'm new to this whole school thing and would love any advice you have to offer.

Come on out to the meeting this Thursday at 7:30 at my backyard. We'll discuss homelessness, christianity, charity, equality, slavery and such through the book Same kind of different as me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. As always, you don't have to had read the book to attend. If you have opinions on these topics, please come and discuss them. Also, all are welcome to come- bring your friends, neighbors, etc. If you'd like to bring some munchies for the general enjoyment we'd all appreciate that (right?)

Don't forget about the upcoming books.

August 19- The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, 320 pages

See you there,
Melissa

Baptism dresses on clearance

I was at the Cottonwood Kohl's today and they had a ton of long white fancy Baptism dresses in sizes 6-10 on clearance. They ranged in price from $10-20. Wow. The original prices went up to $85. Some had jackets that went with them, some were sleeveless. If you're handy with a sewing machine it would be easy to find some white satin and make a sleeve to put in, or just buy a cute white bolero jacket to put over it if you don't like sleeveless. Oh, and if you have a Kohl's card (or get one thru the 16th) you can get an additional 10-30% off that price. Yi-Haw!

Dion's Club Read program

Here's a fun way to encourage reading with your kids (Pre-K thru 6th grade) while getting some cool stuff in return (besides the obvious literary benefits.)
*It says that parents can read books to the students still learning to read*

Read 6 books, write them down, then go to Dion's and ask for a Club Read "scorecard". (We made a lunch date out of it and had a fun time eating pizza and talking about the books we'd read.) While you're there, transfer the books down onto the official paper and you'll get a backpack, a book, a bookmark and a
2nd "scorecard".

If you read 6 more books you write those down and take it to the Isotopes Park and you'll get a t-shirt, a free ticket to an Isotopes game, a free drink for the game and an entry to be the grand prize winner (see scorecard for details.)

Happy reading, eating pizza, watching baseball, etc. Sounds like a fun summer plan to me.

How to get more plants at no cost...

I thought I'd share this article, since so many of us are starting from nothing with our gardens. I haven't tried any of these techniques, but I certainly plan on doing so. I have several plants that need to be divided this fall. I'd love to do some plant swaps with people then if anyone's interested.

Reminder: Movie Night and Book Club

We will be having our Book Club Movie Night TOMORROW, June 10, at 7:30. We will be having it at my house (Chelsey J.) and will be watching the Scarlet Pimpernel. Bring a snack if you'd like. Certainly don't feel like you had to have read the book to come! Invite everyone!

Also, just a reminder about this summer's book club times and books:

June 17- Same kind of different as me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore, 256 pages
July 15- North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, 520 pages
August 19- The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, 320 pages

As always, third Thursday of the month at 7:30. As long as the weather is good, we will be holding it in Melissa's back yard.

Story time at the Balloon Museum

The Balloon Museum has story time every Wednesday. It is really great! The lady that does it is really talented. The best part is you can get into the museum for free and hang out there after it's over!

Baseball FYI

This was sent out to the current baseball players of the Paradise Hills Little League.  I thought that I would pass it along for anyone interested in Fall Ball.  Fall Ball is much more relaxed then the regular spring season and a good chance to learn new skills.

"Fall Registration this Friday, June 11th from 530 to 7 pm and then on Saturday, June 12th from 10 to 2 pm at the fields in front of the concession stand. The cost is $50 for the first child and $25 for the second. Please make sure that your parents bring the 3 proofs of residency and their child’s birth certificate."

You can download the needed forms and look at the boundries (I know that some areas in the ward are in Petroglyph Little League) by going to the Paradise Hills Little League website http://www.eteamz.com/phllbb/index.cfm

Private Swim Lessons

At the beginning of May my boys participated in a fantastic swim development course at West Mesa Pool. The program was run by the President of the Duke City Swim Team, Janet Lyon-Huffman. It was fabulous and my kids really learned a lot. I inquired with Janet to see if she or any of the swim team members offer private swimming lessons. Good news! Coach Janet and her daughter offer private lessons from their home pool (located near Golf Course and Calle Nortena...close to Smith's).

We will be doing lessons with them during the month of July, but I thought I'd share the info in case anyone was interested. Lessons are $10 per hour, per kid and it is a 4:1 ratio (4 kids per 1 teacher). If you want a 1:1 ratio (1 kid per 1 teacher) the cost is $30 per hour, per kid. Here is the info she sent me...

June 7-10 (Mon - Thur): 11AM, 12NOON, 1PM, 2PM & 6PM

Maytag Dishwasher Recall

I was watching the news last night and they announced a HUGE Maytag dishwasher recall...approximately 1.7 million units are affected by this recall. Heating element failures have been reported in specific Maytag dishwashers which have resulted in kitchen fires. Maytag will send out a repairman to fix the issue or give you a credit if you plan on purchasing a new dishwasher.

If you live in a D.R. Horton home you probably have Maytag appliances. Go here to see if your model is affected by the recall.

Looks like the "Maytag Man" will be busy afterall!
